Chapter Thirteen

Alexander Grey stood in all his glory, exuding a force I had never experienced in my life. He was tall and built like a boulder. I figured it would take a few men to move someone with his stature. I was slightly surprised by his dirty blonde hair. I hadn’t expected that color, but I guess it wasn’t really for me to decide. He had very sharp, dangerous features. I couldn’t even look away from him. His eyes changed to a nice dull blue.

“Well, dear nephew, she’s certainly beautiful.” His hand went up to my cheek and he dragged his fingers down my skin. When it continued down to my neck, I flinched back, unable to be courageous any longer. “You are afraid,” he stated. “You’ve been looking behind your back since the very first moment you sensed my presence.”

I tried to remember a time that I had felt that way. I wondered if he was referring to me acting like a coward in the bedroom. He must have caught on because he leaned in close to my ear.

“It was that night in your car. The night you decided to move to New York City,” he whispered. “It was me who put those thoughts in your head to move up here. It brought you closer to me. I’m the one who broke into your apartment just to send a message to your beautiful mother.”

“You can’t get away with what you’ve done,” I spit out, feeling some courage stirring within me.

“I can get away with it. You, my darling, may not even see the light of day after the council is done with you.” He paused. “You truly are beautiful, Marcilla. It’s too bad James is pushing to press charges.”

With that, he strode out. I could vaguely hear Derek gasping for breath in the corner. My mind couldn’t register anything right now. Suddenly, my body started to tingle all over. I was moving, but my body was completely still. Derek was teleporting us to my apartment. His hand went to my stomach.

“I’m putting you under,” he spoke into my head, but his voice still sounded raspy. Numbness consumed me and my vision went black.

I had been conscious for mere minutes when Lizzy told me I had a few hours before I was to appear before the Vampirical Council. I considered every possible escape, but nothing seemed worth it. The options in my closet for professional clothing were relatively limited so I had to go shopping for more. I decided on a black skirt and blazer set with white pinstripes. My simple black stilettos added a nice chic look to my outfit.

Everyone I cared about was going to be in the court room, but Derek was driving me there. I was so jittery that I could barely stay still. He put his hand calmly on my knee to stop my shaking. Looking at him, I knew that he was the best thing to ever happen to me. “Thank you so much for being with me right now.” His smile brought a wonderful peace to my heart.

He parked the car outside the court, but didn’t get out. “Marcilla.” He waited until I was looking at him. “Please do not mention my uncle’s wrongdoings in the court no matter what the verdict is.” I could feel my eyebrows go down in confusion.

     “Why would I do that?”

“Because everything must happen the way it needs to.”

“But that’s a suicidal idea. I’ll be dead before they do anything to him. Do you want me to die? I have no intentions to stand by and let them do anything to me.”

“I’ve already discussed it with your family. Your mom will handle her situation, but you need to just focus on keeping yourself free.”

I got out with a huff, not bothering to wait for Derek to get my door. He always got the doors for me and it was making him upset that I didn’t want to hear his little plan. Well, that’s too bad. His idea sucked and I had no intentions of following through with it.
