It has been a month, Emma and Owen are sitting in a café waiting for Ryan who has asked to meet them. Emma has a gingerbread milkshake whilst Owen has a coffee.
'Do you know what he wants to meet about?' Emma asks Owen.
'No.' Owen shakes his head. 'He just called, asking if we can meet him here.'
'Then it's bad news.' Emma sighs. They see Ryan walk in. He walks over to their table and sits down. 'What's the news?'
'The courts have issued a subpoena.' Ryan notifies them. 'You have to testify in person.'
'I thought she could testify through a video link or behind a screen.' Owen says.
'Normally, yes.' Ryan nods. 'But the judge wants to see how James reacts to seeing Emma and vice versa.' Emma rubs her forehead. 'I did try and argue that it wouldn't be helpful and it could traumatise you even further.' Ryan tells Emma.
'When's the trial?' Emma questions.
'Two months.' Ryan replies. 'Until then, he'll be remanded in custody.'
'What's next then?' Owen asks.
'I'll help you prepare for the trial. We'll go through possible questions. What you could say. How you should act. Stuff like that.' Ryan responds. 'We can meet up whenever you feel like it.'
'I don't know if I can do it.' Emma shakes her head. 'See him again.'
'I know it's going to be hard but he will be going to prison for what he did to you.' Ryan says. 'I promise.'
'Don't make promises you can't keep.' Emma sighs. 'We both know that there is more chance of him getting released than going to prison.' She all continues. 'And it's all because of my rap sheet.'
'Em, the jury will see you as a victim. They won't care about what you did, for example, two years ago. All they care about is the truth.' Ryan reassures the teen. 'As long as you tell the truth, everything will be fine.'
'Why wouldn't I tell the truth?' Emma asks. 'I want him to die in prison for what he did to me.'
'You know what he meant, Em.' Owen outs his hand on her shoulder but she shrugs it off.
'You know what he did to me.' Emma states, tears filling her eyes. 'I was still awake whilst he was cutting through my flesh! I had no anaesthesia. No pain relief. His friends held me down and he cut through me.' Tears stream down her cheeks. 'You have no idea what that feels like. You have no idea what it feels like to be raped again and again. You have no idea what it feels like to carry the baby of your rapist, give birth to that baby and then that baby die.' Owen and Ryan stay silent. 'My daughter died!'
'Em-' Ryan starts to say.
'Why would I lie to get that son of a bitch off the hook?!' She cuts him off. 'He better go to prison.' She stands up and walks out.
.
Emma makes it home. She sees Betty in the front room with Leo.
'Hey.' Betty smiles when she sees Emma. 'You okay?' She questions, noticing that Emma's eyes are red and puffy.
'Yeah.' Emma nods. 'Just bad memories.' She adds. 'Where's Amelia?'
'She was called into work.' Betty replies. 'Are you sure you're okay?'
'I'm fine.' Emma says again. 'I'm going to grab some food and go up to my room.' She walks through to the kitchen, grabs an apple, a cereal bar and a bag of chips from the kitchen. She looks out to see if Betty is watching, as she's not, Emma walks to the alcohol cupboard and takes out a bottle of vodka before taking a knife from the knife block and going up to her room.
