Ryan and the principal follow Dani up the stairwell to the roof. She tries to open the door but it's locked. She turns around to face Ryan and the principal.

'She was up here earlier.' Dani tells them.

'Stand back.' Ryan tells Dani.

'Kicking down the door won't work.' Dani shakes her head.

'I've got to at least try.' Ryan says.

'She's right.' The principal adds. 'The door's on a security lock. Only people with authorised access can open the door. Which means she most likely hacked the system or got someone to do it for her. I'll see if we can get the doors open.'

'I'll call for backup.' Ryan nods. A couple of minutes later, the principal and Ryan turn back to face Dani.

'The system's completely down.' The principal states. 'We can't open the door.'

'Seattle F.D. are on their way. They'll be able to help get the door open.' Ryan says. 'Can you go down and meet them?' He asks the principal. 'Tell them we'll need tools.' The principal nods and walks away.

'What if they're too late?' Dani asks Ryan. 'What if she's already jumped?'

'Everything's going to be fine.' Ryan reassures her. 'I've asked for Station 19 specifically.'

No more than fifteen minutes later, the principal returns with Travis and Jack. They have a toolbag alongside some rope.

'What's the rope for?' Dani asks.

'To get Emma down.' Travis replies. 'You'll see.'

'We're going to break the hinges of the door.' Jack looks at the principal. Within ten minutes, the door is off its hinges and they all squeeze through the little gap. They see Emma standing on the ledge.

'Em?' Ryan says softly. Emma looks back at them but then averts her eyes. 'Em, why don't you come down and we can have a little chat.'

'No.' Emma shakes her head. 'I'm done.'

'What do you mean you're done?' Travis asks as he walks closer to her with Jack.

'I'm done being a victim.' Emma states. 'I'm done having to deal with shitty people in my life.'

'Emma, think about how your dad will feel if you jump.' Jack says to Emma.

'He'd understand why I jumped.' Emma simply responds. Travis and Jack walk closer. 'Don't come any closer to me.'

'It's okay.' Travis tells her, as he walks to one corner of the room. 'We're just going to stand in the corners.' He adds as Jack walks to the other corner. 'We'll stay right here.'

'Why don't you tell us what's going on?' Jack suggests. 'We can help.'

'I am beyond help.' Emma laughs. 'I've been planning this for months. I'm done with it all.' As she's talking, Jack and Travis subtly drop a harness rope down the outside on the building. The next storey down, Maya and Andy are at the windows. They attach some rope to the snap hooks and tug on it to signal that it's secure. 'I just want it all to be over.' She steps closer to the edge, hovers one foot over the edge and leans forward. At this, Travis and Jack tug the rope up, pulling it towards Emma, catching her and sending her flying back onto the roof.

(Watch the video if you are unsure of what I am talking about. It's only ten seconds - it was inspired by Chicago Fire)

She tries to get up but Ryan, Jack and Travis run to her and stop her. She continues to try and fight them off until eventually, Ryan gets a grip on her. Travis looks through the medical bag and takes out a syringe of sedative. He takes the lid off and jabs into Emma's upper arm. After a few minutes, she calms down.

'Miller, Warren!' Travis says into his radio. 'Get up here!'

.

Ten minutes later, Emma is being wheeled into Grey-Sloan where Owen is waiting anxiously for her. She is wheeled into a trauma bay where Alex and Levi check Emma over for any neck and spinal injuries. Owen stands outside looking into the room and Amelia joins him.

'Hey.' She rubs his back. 'You okay?' She asks, noticing that tears are filling his eyes.

'I can't see her like this.' Owen shakes his head. 'Not again. I should have spotted the signs this time! I should have been able to stop this.'

'The firefighters said that she told them she'd been this for months. She's been unhappy for a long time. We both know that. But when she's this unhappy. This depressed. Nothing would have changed.' Amelia tells him.

'I can't be here. Not right now.' Owen shakes his head. 'I'm going to go for a walk. Will you stay with her?'

'Of course.' Amelia nods. Owen nods back, rubs his forehead and walks off.

.

Half an hour later, after being cleared of any head, neck or spinal trauma, Emma is on the psyche ward. Given the nature of the incident, the psychiatry attending has put Emma on an initial week-long hold and then re-evaluate whether she needs to stay longer. Owen is standing outside of her room, with a coffee in his hand, looking in. The psychiatry attending is talking to Emma but Owen can tell that Emma isn't doing much talking. After five minutes, the attending walks out.

'She's not doing much talking.' They shake their head. 'She's saying a lot of trigger words and phrases so I think we should keep her in for longer than a week but we'll see where we are at the end of her initial stay.'

'Okay.' Owen nods. 'What did she say?'

'Not much.' The attending replies. 'Just that she wished that she had jumped sooner.' Owen sighs and rubs his face. 'She's going to need a lot of therapy to get through this.'

'Yeah.' Owen nods in agreement. 'Thank you.' The attending nods and walks away. Owen drops the empty coffee cup in the bin behind the nurse's nurses station and sinks down into one of the chairs.'
