It had kept me awake all night.. I felt like I had been blindsided with another possibility but what?
I got out of bed and walked downstairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water for myself. Instead of being alone, Trevor was sitting in the kitchen with his head in his hands.
I crept up clearing my throat and he looked up to me and then sighed sulking again.
"Can't sleep?" He asked and I nodded walking over to join him. "Yeah me either."
"What's on your mind?" I asked sitting across from him as he looked up to me.
"Nothing, I just can't sleep." He sighed and sat back in the chair. "What's keeping you awake?"
"Camry." I looked down at my hands. "She doesn't believe the story being fed to her and now I'm second guessing myself."
"What did she say?" He asked becoming enthralled.
"That the police are just trying to cover their ass and pin the blame an anyone." I shrugged and he shook his head confused.
"Why would they pin it on your mom? She's a big reason why these murderers were caught and she is a big part of this town?" I hadn't thought that far I guess. Why would they pin it on my mom?
"I guess I just have to talk to my mom, hear it from her?" It was the first thought that had come to my mind. I hadn't spoke to her since that painful day..
"Aimee told me that she's in a rehab facility three hours from here and she's not allowed to have visitors."
"Well who authorized that?" I looked him up and the lights had flickered on as I nearly leaped out of my chair.
"It's three am." My dads voice broke through the silence. "I can hear you in my study." I turned back to look at him still fully dressed and wide awake. He couldn't sleep either, more so than us because he hadn't even changed his clothes.
"Sorry dad we couldn't sleep." I pushed my hair from my face and looked back to Trevor.
"Aimee knows better than to have her boyfriends sleep over without permission." He looked to Trevor and Trevor's eyes widened.
"Sorry Mr. Meyer but we aren't dating, she just wouldn't let me leave. She was very upset." He kept it vague making me question why he was here too now.
My dad sighed and walked over to join us. He looked weary but was wide awake.
"Just keep it down please? And try and get some sleep." He placed his hand on my shoulder and squeezed tightly. "I'm going to head out for a bit." He grabbed his jacket from the chair beside me sighing. "I have to go and clean up a mess down at the park, forgot I offered my services during the memorial." He chuckled shaking his head at himself. "But I'll be back in the morning."
"Okay dad, we'll probably be asleep." I shrugged unsure what was going to happen now. He patted me on the shoulder before walking out the back door to leave us alone.
"I have to go talk to my mom." I leaned into the table searching his eyes hoping he'd join me.
"Do you have any plans tomorrow?" He asked and my shoulders slouched remembering the party Issac had invited me too.
"This guy, Issac, invited me to a party tomorrow. A birthday party."
"Well skip it," he said too eagerly. "we can road trip tomorrow and go see your mom." He spoke like my decision should be a no brainier.
"I sorta like him?" My face twisted up feeling as though I should walk on eggshells around him when speaking of other boys I was interested in. I knew he always had something to say to discourage me from pursuing someone other than himself. "I think he could be the one for me."
Surprisingly he hadn't rolled his eyes but he still did have a snarky remark. "How long have you known him for? A day?" He snorted finding himself hilarious while I rolled my eyes at him. "But seriously, I think getting answers is far more important than some guy. You can have a million more dates in your lifetime." He shrugged and I sighed because he was right. Who knew how much time I or any of us left to get answers?
"Fine but we'll have to leave early just so I can do both, hopefully."
"How about right now? We could be back here by the afternoon." He suggested and I wanted to instantly say yes but remembered Aimee upstairs.
"What about Aimee? Do you think she would want to come with us?"
"She just wants to put this entire thing behind her. It's causing her nothing but pain and confusion." He bit at his bottom lip and shook his head. "I don't think she'd be up for it, the last person she wants to see is your mom. Are you sure you want to see her?"
"I need to find the truth and she's apart of the story, a big part." I sighed shutting my eyes and thinking of seeing her, thinking of my fathers warning. He only ever wanted to protect us... "Lets go."
