The attic was a good quiet place to think, that's why June didn't come down the other night. Not when she heard Jack and Heights leave, not when Miss Crawford called her down, not even as she looked out the window to see her brother walking away.
She was sad this would be the last time she would see him in a long time. But the other part of her was glad. He always left her and made excuses. He's always lied about everything.
She hoped Spot didn't mention anything to Miss Crawford about not being a newise at the moment. She would make sure they would not be in danger. Though they didn't have to think about it till it was Lavender's birthday.
When you turned 14 you technically have to leave, to get a job and stuff. But Miss Crawford saw how close June and her friends were and decided when they were all 14 they would leave.
It was Mike first, then James, Alex, June and soon to be Lavender. June had to admit she was kinda scared. She's always lived in the orphanage, even though the Lodging House is nice, it would be weird to live somewhere else.
June wrapped her big, red, cardigan close to her, it was kinda an inside joke how much she loved it. She wore it everywhere. Though kinda had to, seeing they didn't have the money to buy a new pair of clothes every week or so.
She was writing in her journal looking out the window. She was writing all of her thoughts, which she made 5 pages of already. It was weird to write her own thoughts other than making up stories. Though, the writing stopped as she heard footsteps coming up.
"You missed breakfast"
"Well I wasn't hungry" June spoke back writing in her journal again. She could tell all her close friends were there, hearing all the foot steps.
"Thank god" Alex began "Because Ryan and Rick kinda ate your toast"
"You're so helpful" Lavender rolled her eyes and sat next to June, pulling a box over. June closed her book and turned to her dear friend "Why you guys here?"
"Because you're not in a good mood"
"No sh!t sherlock " Mike brought a box over to sit on as well. Everyone looked at him causing him to raise an eyebrow "What? "
"When did you swear?"
"You've never heard me swear?" They shook their heads. James began saying he thought Mike didn't know what swearing was. "Anyway, June you're sad. So being amazing friends we're here to cheer you up"
"Also we're getting out of tiding the kitchen" James smirked. Which made them laugh. June then put her head to Lavender's shoulder "Ugh. I don't know what to do. Spot is keeping secrets again. Also, he's saying it's to dangerous to be a newsie right now"
"You think it's Harlem?" James asked, looking around the room. Lavender spoke explaining who else could it be? "That guy, Venom, gives me the creeps"
"This ain't helping" Alex spoke out, lending again the slanted wall. They saw June have her head resting on her hand. Looking sad as they talked about the situation.
It was James who was the one to stand up. He walked over to some boxes and began looking through some stuff.
"What are you doing?"
"Give me a minute" He pushed a box, before opening another one. James then took something out of the box, making some of the kids jaws drop.
"Your ukulele!" Lavender was shocked. It's been quite a long time since James had played it. You could tell by the dust, also some paint was off.
Last time was probably when they were 12, even then he only played it a couple of times. It was when he was 9 he played it all the time. This school was giving instruments away, Miss Crawford was lucky got the ukulele. No one seemed more interested in playing it though, expert from James. Though as the years went on he played it less, though it always stayed in his heart.
