Chapter 15 - "You made chocolate cheesecake!"

An hour later, Angie had left to go pick up Emy while Ellie had gone to the gallery with Matthew before heading to the park.

"It's really nice up here," she said taking in the small living room. The walls were painted a light grey color that created a spacious and modern look to the room. The couch was a white two-seater with black and dark grey cushions. There were two one seaters on each side to create a semi-circle around the glass coffee table in front of a flat-screen mounted on the wall.

There was two floor to ceiling french windows on either side of the television that lead to two small balconies. There were a few landscape paintings on the wall as well as a picture of Matthew's family.

"Did you decorate it or did you buy it as such?" Ellie asked, curious to know more about his personal taste on such things.

"Actually, I did it myself. Though it's not quite how I wanted it to be" Matt's voice replied from another room.

Ellie followed his voice and found him in the kitchen rummaging through the fridge. The room was slightly larger than the living room with black marble counters and white cupboards.

"I think it looks great", she commented while eyeing the spotless stainless steel utensils hanging on the wall. "Though it does lack a bit of color." She added on a lower tone. The only colorful things were the lime green and magenta plates and mugs.

"You're right, it does. The wall between the living room and the kitchen should have been knocked down and an island should've been there. With that idea in mind, I had chosen the colors to be more or less in harmony." He shrugged, turning to look at her. "Since it will be done in a few weeks, I'll wait till then to add the colors."

He smiled at her before turning back to the fridge. He grabbed something and turned to place it on the counter.

As he does so, Ellie noticed that it was a chocolate cheesecake covered with chocolate shavings and pieces of strawberries.

Just like Amber wanted, she thought to herself, holding back a smile.

"Oh my, did you make this?" she asked, touched that he had remembered.

He gave her a small embarrassed smile before nodding shyly, "well, I may have baked one or two." Was his equally shy response, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Oh, you didn't have to go through all that trouble! You could have simply bought one, she wouldn't have known the difference!" Ellie said disbelievingly. "And why two?" she asked curiously.

"Don't get me wrong though I think that's really nice of you" she added quickly afraid that she had hurt his feeling with her reaction.

"Well, one is just for her, I'll give it to her when she'll be going home while the other is for the picnic. And I didn't have the heart to disappoint Amber." Was his honest reply.

The sincere look of care squeezed at her heart as she racked her brain for something to say. Luckily for her, Amber ran into the kitchen, looking for something interesting to play with.

"Mummy can we go to the park now?" she asked with wide eyes, coming to tug on her mother's sundress.

"Don't you want to see what Matthew made for dessert first?" Ellie questioned her daughter still trying to conceal her smile.

Curious the little girl climbed on one of the chairs to get a better look at what was in the metal recipient on the counter. Upon discovering her favorite dessert, the little girl squealed, her features breaking into a smile.

"You made chocolate cheesecake!" she exclaimed jumping to hug Matthews while the latter couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

After placing the cheesecake in a picnic basket, he took hold of it with his left hand and offered his right hand to Amber, "Shall we?"

The little girl grabbed his hand with a giggle and skipped beside him as they made their way to the door, Ellie following closely behind, admiring the scene before her.

A part of her longing to see that kind of scene more often.
