You grew up believing that one man,
Was supposed to be your hero- and today,
You don't even know how to pronounce the name
You once called him
He chose to trade promises of adventure for
A finger sealing your mouth closed, never speak a word
Surrender your body to a man without a soul
A dirty secret, never to be told
You grew up believing,
That the thin sheet of dignity
That plastered your privacy closed
Was all you were
And if that worth was taken,
Glitter would never be gold,
You could never be sold-
But the man that was supposed to be your hero,
Ripped you wide open, whole
Took the windows out of the house that was your body
And raided you from within
The man that was supposed to hold your trust
Invited everybody in
So when boys disguised as angels,
Came knocking on your door,
Begging for pictures,
Coaxing you for more
You were inclined to feel like that's all you really were
So you'd send pictures of your body
While you stood in front of a hole hanging on your wall
That seemed to drain every last drop of security
That kept you going, at all
You grew up believing,
That your family was what mattered most,
Is that why your uncle
Treats your past like it's your ghost?
Mistakes your sexuality
For an invitation
Disregarded your age like it was open season
On finding your fantasies at the age of 41
At family gatherings, it seems as though your sinking within your skin
And his eyes are watching
Daring to come in
But this house is not for sale,
The men who were supposed to safe guard it,
Mistook my open curtains for an entry in
but,
I'm building a moat around this princess' castle
All your broken promises a gate that you wont
Be able to come crashing in
The tears that I've discarded will fill a depth I cant describe
I hope that you'll try pass me,
Only to drown in your attempt to reclaim
What was always mine,
And has no trace of your foolish sin
I don't need a man who was supposed to save me,
I don't need a man to crown me queen,
I'm destroying the boundaries you created,
And I'm crowning myself king.
