The sky was an inky blackness, with no moon or no stars.Mia had fallen asleep leaving me alone with my thoughts again. My eyelids were starting to get a little heavy and pain flowed through my legs. I needed to stretch for a moment.
Suddenly, in my rear view mirror, I saw familiar red and blue lights, zooming past car's on the highway. My heart immediately picked up, but I tried to keep calm.
It's okay, Andrew. Maybe they caught a speeder or something. Maybe some kind of drug bust?
I constantly kept checking as more police cars came into view. But then, I knew they were after me when I heard a helicopter.
My breath caught in my throat as I tried to find it. Then, a beam of light illuminated the car, making Mia wince from the bright light.
I thought I was going to throw up.
"Andrew Miller!" called a booming voice.
Okay yeah, I'm fucked.
"Pull over the vehicle!"
"What the hell is going on?" Mia groaned, sitting up and rubbed her eyes.
"Mia we might be in trouble." my hoarse voice replied, shakily. She looked back to see the police gaining on us, the sirens being within earshot.
"Um.."
The police were gaining and I had no other choice but to gun it. I slammed on the gas and swerved between cars, accidentally scratching some cars paint off.
"Andrew, my god!" Mia gasped, holding onto her seat belt. I sped forward, the beam of light following us. I veered and weaved my way around cars but they were all in the way. The sirens had started to wail in my ear and my heart was thumping in my chest like a fast-paced drum.
I slowed down and went behind a car and veered off-road, the car juttering and bouncing violently as we drove in the grass. I floored it and sped up, trying to lose the damn helicopter, which I knew I probably couldn't do.
The police cars had parted a path on the highway like Moses. They all sped toward me, making my hands shake. I quickly jerked the wheel left and merged back into the cars.
Now, the police were right on my tail, the ear piercing sirens filling the car. Mia's panicked expression only made me more panicked.
We got rammed in the back, making us jerk against the locked seat belts. I didn't know how violent a tap to the back could be. I tried to go faster but I was already going as fast as this thing would go.
We got slammed in the back again, making Mia squeak.
"Andrew, just pull over!" she cried, pulling on my shirt. I yanked my arm away from her and tried to block out the sirens.
"No. I won't give up."
The booming voice called out to me again. "Andrew Miller pull over the vehicle, now!"
I turned into an exit and zipped past the cars, only to my surprise to see police outside their car, throwing the spike wire down.
I immediately hit the brakes, screeching to a sputtering stop. Sadly, I didn't stop fast enough and I ran over the spikes, the wheels popping and the car rolled to a stop. Without a skip in my beat, I reached back, grabbed my gun and practically kicked down the car door.
The police started to gather around and I lifted the gun and they lifted theirs back.
"Lower your weapon and get on your knees!"
My breath quickened as my finger squeezed the trigger. Just then, Mia lept out the car and ran to me. She collided into my chest and I saw the reaction of the police. They were stunned. More police cars pulled up, blocking us in.
"Andrew put the gun down. It's over." she whispered to only I would hear.
"Mia what have I already said? I can't let you go."
"Look around." her voice was ambivalent and bleak. "We're done." her eyes stared deep into mine and I couldn't help but feel as if that had a double meaning.
Before I could say another word, she opened her mouth. "Andrew put the gun down, seriously." she demanded.
"Mia..." I growl.
"I swear to god, Andrew. Just this once listen to me." she clenched her teeth.
"No! Are you just begging to be taken away?!"
Her face twisted with confusion and anger. "Yes." she replied through her teeth which made me pause.
Did I hear her right? Maybe that damn helicopter is too damn loud.
"Excuse me?" I say and she immediately bites back.
"I said yes! Andrew, I don't love you! I never have! It's time for you to let me go. Go and get some help."
"This isn't the time for jokes!" I retort, convincing myself she didn't mean that.
She laughed angrily, slapping her good wrist on her thigh. "You don't get it, do you? You never have you, you delusional idiot!"
"Why are you talking like this?" I frown. "I swear if you're the brainwashed version..."
"No!" she grabbed her hair and stomped her foot. "No no no! You fucking moron! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! UGH! Do you know how long I've wanted to say that for?"
This cant be real.
"Ever since you flipped that table over and made me clean up the pieces, I've hated you! And god it feels so good to say it!"
But...
Her hands fly together as she wiggles off her ring and throws it to the ground, not breaking eye contact. She then process to walk over to the cops, leaving me confused and sad.
"So that's how this is?" I yell at her. "You just...just f-faked the whole thing?!"
Wake up, Andrew this isn't real. This isn't real. This isn't real. This isn't real. This isn't real.
"You're lying! You're lying, Mia! Come back over here!"
Why would she choose now to play tricks on me and say all these hurtful things?
"Never again, Andrew." she folded her arms.
My sadness quickly turned into anger. "So what? You're going to side with these fucks over me? The man who gave you everything? The man who actually cares for you? These bastards don't care about you! They're just doing their job!"
"Possibly." she replied. "but being with them, they'll make me happier than you ever could."
A jumble of emotions brewed in my heart. Could Mia be telling the truth? No..no she can't. It's just not fucking possible. She's proved her love many times. We we're just holding hands...we were bonding. I...I-I don't understand. Somehow she got brainwashed again...
"They can't make you happy if theyre dead." and with that, I raised my gun and fired, making Mia scream.
"NO!"
I kind of expected to be shot doing that, so I pinched my eyes shut but didn't hear, or feel, anything else. I opened my eyes and immediately dropped my gun, my blood running cold as I realized what I had just done.
