My head jolted up to the sound of tires on gravel. I blinked and looked around, realizing I was still on the couch. Rubbing my face, I stood up and behind the TV, red and blue lights were flashing through the window.
I froze as my heart sank into my socks. My mind drew a blank, suddenly.
What the fuck? H-how? How did they find me?
I find myself stumbling back onto the couch, falling into the soft cushions. A nauseating feeling crashes over me, making my head spin. My breath now starts to become erratic as I glance at Mia's door.
I have to do something!
I sprinted from the couch to my room, quickly sliding on my knees to grab the key from under my bed. I grab my backpack from the corner and run to my shrine room, my hand fumbling with the key as I put it in the lock.
Damn my shaky hands!
Once I do, I burst open the door and grab my journal and stuffed it inside. I then went back to my room, panicking.
What should I grab? I don't have much time!
"Andrew Miller!" my head snapped towards the booming voice. "We know you're in there! Open the door, we have you surrounded! Come out with your hands up and give us the girl!" shouted an officer.
My heart thumped in my chest wildly, my hands shaking badly. They wanted Mia. They wanted me to plummet back into a spirling depression, didn't they?
Well I won't let them!
I try to snap myself out my panicked state and then start quickly shoving the essentials in my bag, like: a few clothes, toiletries, and food, etc.
"Andrew Miller! Come out or we'll come in! This is your last warning!"
"Shit...!" I breathed. I shove my gun in my pants and sling the backpack around my shoulders and dash to Mia's room. She's still sound asleep.
How adorab- Andrew! Not the time!
I grab her backpack and shove her essentials in it too. I grab her jacket and tie it around my neck, picking up her small body, wrapped in her thick blanket.
As gently as I could, I raced to the kitchen and opened the pantry, trying my best not to let Mia slip out my hands, and or, wake her up. I don't want her worrying.
I grab the bar and pull it down, unlocking the door. I place Mia inside the secret compartment behind the pantry and step inside myself. I shut the door until I hear the lock and slide down the wall. I slap my hands over my mouth to quiet my breathing.
I close my eyes and try to count to ten. Calm down, Andrew, calm down.
I hear the door being forcefully pounded on. With every bang, my heart would jump.
Finally the door bursted open and I hear the thumping of many people's boots on the floor.
To comfort myself, I hug Mia's sleeping form and try to go to my happy place.
"Find the girl. Keep all exists secured!" I heard someone say. I hear a few footsteps making their way to the kitchen. I bite my tongue and hold my breath as I hear them being shifted around.
The pantry door gets opened and sliver of light can be seen through the cracks. I had to put my hand over my mouth to keep from gasping.
Finally I hear someone say 'clear' and the footsteps faded away. I almost sighed in relief but quickly realized how stupid that would've been.
One fuck up, Andrew and it's over...
The seconds seemed to last hours as they scavenged the house. My eyes darted aimlessly in the inky blackness around us. I just tried my best to keep still.
