Before hitting the road, I had gotten Mia and I some new clothes, a blanket and snacks for later. Then, we were on the road for hours. We woke up around three pm and now it was... eleven pm.We had only stopped for bathroom breaks, which Mia used a lot. I had to stop and move the snacks into the trunk because Mia wouldn't stop trying to get inside of them. And she wouldn't stop saying something about peanut butter!
But right now..everything was tranquil as Mia rested her head on the window, her nice, warm, new, blanket covering her. Her legs was curled up to her on the seat and the seat belt was gripped in her hand. She looked so peaceful.
I wanted to choke her to death.
I almost fucking swerved the car off the road, surprised by the sudden thought. What the fuck? No! What would I want to kill my Mia? She hasn't done anything to me! No! Don't think about it, Andrew, you're only going to make yourself cry.
I swallowed and look at my wife at the corner of my eye.
I focused back on the road and sighed.
Beat her pretty little face black and blue.
"STOP!" I scream, making Mia jolt. She places her feet on the floor and releases the seat belt, looking around. I wipe the tears in my eyes and pretend like that wasn't me.
"Andrew? What happened?" she mumbled, her sleepy voice adorable. Why would anyone want to hurt her?
"Some..asshole cut us off." I mumble. I hated lying to my Mia but if she knew I was thinking of...purposely hurting her, she may not want to be with me anymore, and I can't have that.
I swallow and now use two hands to drive the car. She sighs and adjust her legs back into the seat, tucking the blanket around her. "Can you please pull over? I want some peanut butter."
"No. I'm not going to satisfy your cravings."
"Why not? Please? I'll let you have some." She whined.
"I can't believe you persuaded me into buying a whole jar, though."
She didn't say anything and the car went silent again. I looked at her and found out she had fallen back asleep. Cute.
I rub my shoulder and wince a little. It's tender but healing. Slowly, but, it's getting there.
The exit hole is what hurt the most. I could barely lean in my seat or it'd cause pain. I couldn't even sleep on my back last night and I'm a back sleeper!
It sucked, to say the least. But, I learned my lesson: don't get shot.
I sigh and saw the sign that was coming up.
Welcome to Indiana
Oh thank God. Just a while longer and I can finally rest my eyes. I continued driving down the dark highway, only lit up by other cars. The sky was covered with clouds, so I couldn't see the stars and the moon was barely visible.
About half an hour later, up came a hotel. It looked pretty decent so I pulled in. I took at glance at Mia and she was still asleep, so I slipped out the car and stood in the freezing cold. What is it right now? Fucking negative degrees?
It's a good thing I got us new coats. I quickly rush into the warmth of the hotel and see the person behind the counter.
"Hi, can I get a room?"
The guy looked at me bored and then down. He mumbled something and looked back up. "Uh, we have an available room on the third floor. How many nights are you staying?"
I thought for a second. "Just one night. We'll be out by morning."
"Okay that'll be one hundred twenty dollars." I frowned. For one night?! Jesus, these things just keep being more expensive! The service and food here better be amazing.
I give him a wad of cash and he slide me the key card. "You're in room 314. Do you need help with getting any luggage out your car?"
"No." I huffed and turned on my heel, getting back into the car. I pull into a parking space, which was like impossible to find, and woke up Mia. I gently shook her at first, then started calling her name.
"Mia, darling. Mia, get up. We're here."
"Hm?" her beautiful eyes flutter open. She sits up and let's the blanket slid off her shoulders. She looks around and squints in the dark. "Oh...Andrew. Where are we?"
"At a hotel. C'mon." I wave her on, turning off the car. She unbuckles her seatbelt and balls up the blanket, putting her shoes back on. I got out the car and grabbed our backpack from the trunk, slinging them around my shoulder.
Mia gets out the car, still sleepy, and I hold her hand as I lock the car and walk inside. I look around for an elevator and get inside pressing the third floor. Suddenly, a weight in my left shoulder makes me look over. Mia's head and laying on me. Man, she must've been really tired. My little angel...
"Mia," I say gently. "Don't fall asleep just yet, love." She dosent move. I laugh and the door opens. I see two kids and a teenager in their bathing suits, looking giddy. They move to the side and I hold Mia up as I walk to our room.
We walked down the long hallway and I finally found the room. I slid the key card into the door and it beeped. I swung it open, turning on the lights and let Mia stumble in.
I shut the door and take off my coat and shoes. I turn around and laugh when I see Mia on the bed, nothing taken off. I shake my head and walk to her.
"Mia, sweetie. Are you asleep already?" I ask. Nothing. I grab her fluffy coat and slowly pull it off of her. I then to to her boots and slip them off, tossing them behind me. I take off her hat and gloves, putting them on the nightstand beside the bed, Next, I tug the blanket from under her and then gently place it on top of her.
She's so cute!
She slides her arms under the pillow and adjusts in her sleep, her hair falling around her face. I kneel down and tuck it behind her ear. Whoa, I just got deja vu.
That reminded me when I snuck into Mia's house when she was seventeen once. She was a sleeping angel just like she is now.
At least I don't have to worry about anyone coming in. I finally have her to myself.
I climb into the bed too and slip under the cool covers. I still have to lay on my side, but at least Mia will be the last thing I see when I close my eyes.
