Girl Meets World

Chapter 1- Home For The Holidays

Not everything has always been moonshine and roses.
But the times that everything was actually normal was rare.
It is a cold December night.
Even colder than ever before.
Maybe it was just my imagination.
Maybe not.
My mom was at work and it was time I got going.
The one thing I could never get used to is that I can't trust anyone.
Not that I have trust issues but because of my father.
A story for another night.
I head out the door and go a few steps up to an apartment I know.

"Hi Matthews," I said.
I knew the family my whole life actually.
"Peaches!" Riley said and greeted her best friend.
"Hi Maya," said Mrs Matthews.
"Hello Mrs. Matthew. Mr Matthew. Where is Auggie?" I asked.

A little boy around five years old ran up to me and I crunched down to his level.

"Hey buddy. How are you doing?" I asked.

It is not very strange for me to love children.
I am actually self one, aren't I?

"Good. Uncle Joshua is coming."

I smile and chuckle a bit.
I think I know this Uncle Joshua character. But wasn't sure.

"Is your brother coming Mr. Matthews?" I ask curiously.
"Yes my sixteen year old brother. Sounds weird. Sixteen."

I laugh.
It wasn't weird thinking I'll be spending my time with my best friend's seventeen year old uncle.
Just awkward.
Suddenly the door bell rings and Mr Matthews opens it.

"Surprise!"

Mr. Matthews greeted his brother with a hug and shortly after that Riley, Auggie and Mrs. Matthews does the same.

"And you are?" he asks.
"Maya. You must be Josh," I said.
"I am. Great meeting you," Josh said and he went over to Mr Matthews.

I felt something weird in me.
Like a crush but it couldn't be.
A crush on thirteen years old?
What would my dad think?
The one person I could never talk about.

"Maya are you okay?" Riley asked and my mind went blank.
"Maya," Riley said loud enough that her mom could hear.
"Sweetheart is something wrong?" Mrs. Matthews asked.
"No," I replied softly.

Josh was looking at me and the look in his eyes were... Scary.

"How long have you known Riley?" Josh asked trying to get the attention of my weird mood.
"Um... Twelve years since I was five years old. Excuse me," I said.

I don't know what happened but I just went out the door.
It was as if I knew something has changed.
I was out for half an hour and went back.
Lots of people showed up while I was gone and it made me feel...
Well I don't know how. But something had changed.

"Maya I want to introduce you to someone. This is Shawn."
It was a guy in his early to mid thirties.

"Riley has talked about you a lot. You must be the friend."
"Yes I am. Please to meet you Mr. Hunter," I said and a few people stared at me.
"I know most kids have manners but call me Shawn. I'm fine with it," Shawn said and I nod my head smiling.

The evening went by very fast and even though I know what I felt might have been my imagination it wasn't.
What I felt for my best friend's uncle was a crush.
Maybe even more but that I'll find out with time.

Josh's pov

It was quite late the night and everyone was still at Cory's house.
Riley had checked on Auggie who fell asleep and I looked for Maya.
Eventually I found her.
Fast asleep on the couch.

"Cory I think we have another sleeper," Josh said to Cory.
"Apparently. Will you take her to Riley's room?" Cory asked and Josh picked Maya up.

She is as light as a feather, he thought.
He laid her down in Riley's bed and threw a blanket gentle over her.

"Where is Maya?" Riley asked.
"Josh found her asleep on the couch. He went to put her in bed."

"I am really starting to think that this is a weird Christmas party."
"Why Uncle Josh?" Riley asked Josh.
"Maya seems very... Strange," Josh said.
"Her dad... She should rather tell you herself," Riley said.

It was really weird that Riley was so strange about Maya's father but I didn't want to stir.
It was after all her decision who to tell.
Maybe it was just very strange cause a girl is over Christmas at my brother's.
Why wouldn't she be at home or does she not have one?
