Chapter 5 - Compliments

It's been awhile since we were in Philadelphia and my mind couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened when we were there.
I got compliments from Josh Matthews.
I didn't think that would possible happen.
But it did.
And I had no idea how that was even possible.
I did actually have a few things to do.
My mom said that she wanted to fix our relationship but that didn't happen.
It's a late May evening and I was sitting at the Matthews.
In these three months a lot has happened including me trying to get as much as I can done.
Auggie is turning six in a matter of days and I just knew I had to do something special for him.
He has been apart of my life for six years and that was enough.
I was busy writing a song awhile ago.
But now I was busy with homework.
A paper for History when the door opened.
It was Josh and of course the first person he noticed was me.

"I think you're more here than your own home," Josh said smiling and touched my back briefly before heading to his brother.
"Well she is staying with us for a few days. Her mother apparently had some things to do so she went to Manhattan," Mr Matthews said.
"She went to see my father. Something that they have to discuss," I say.
"Is there trouble?" Josh asked and I stood up.
"No she just wants to start a fight," I say and brushed a piece of hair out of my eyes.
"Can I get you some coffee?" I ask.
"Please," Josh said.

Josh's pov

I looked for a few seconds at her.
She looked absolutely gorgeous.
There was no lie about that.
Yeah I do realize that I am talking about a fourteen year old but wow.

I pour the coffee and put everything in then I take it to him.

"Thanks Gorgeous," Josh said and my heart stood still.

I have never heard that word but I knew it was something I liked.
I smile at him and sit down to where I was when he arrived.

Josh looked over at Maya and was releaved when she did nothing at the nickname.
He thought for sure she would do something but she ignored it.
Well not exactly.
He could see she didn't expect it but she just smiled at him.
But his niece wasn't going to leave it.

"What just happened?" Riley ask and I look up.
"Sorry?" I say and everyone laughed including Josh.

He then walked over and sat down next to me.

"What are you busy with?" Josh asked as he sipped his coffee.
"A History essay on Belgium," I said.
"Only you who will let them learn about that," Josh said.

I quickly finish writing the last sentence and put everything back.

"I hope that is done correctly," Mr Matthews said.
"Wanna see it?" I ask.
"No. Let my brother read it. Will be nice hearing what he has to say about the stuff I'm teaching you," Mr Matthews said and I gave it to Josh.

He read it and quickly gave it back to me.

"Good work. You know what they expect and your handwriting is very good. I would say 90%," Josh said.
"Really? Thank you," I say.
"My pleasure," Josh said.

Josh's pov

I've known Maya now a little more than five months.
But I don't get more comfortable talking to her somehow.
And neither does she.
That we both can see and even Cory noticed that the last time.
But she did surprise me.
Cause...
Wow I had no idea she could sing like that.
And it doesn't seem like she is familiar with compliments either.

"Okay. What about some coffee?" Mrs Matthews answered and my phone rang.
"My mom excuse me for a second," I said and went out.

"What the hell is up with you? You guys are like super nerves," Cory said.
"No kidding Cor. I know we are but not why," Josh said.
"Do you like her?" Riley asked and Josh freaked out.
"Are you CRAZY?" Josh yells-asks.

Unfortunately for him it's so loud that Maya heard him.

"What's going on?" I ask.
"Ask them. Come on. Tell her with what ridiculous theory you came up," Josh said.
"You guys are crushing," Riley said and I decided to act like Josh wants or how he will.
"Did you lose your mind? We barely know each other," I said.

I think she knew what I wanted to hear so she said the same but I'm not sure.
We'll find out with time.

"Thanks. You are really crazy. What did your mom want?" Josh asked.
"Goodness knows. Something about my father probably. Had to go."

I snap something and grab my book.
I go to the right page and hand it to Josh.

"What do you think about it?" I ask.
"A song?" Josh asked and I nod.
"Well I'll only know when I hear it," Josh said.
"Have a few minutes?" I ask.
"Yeah. Let's go," Josh said.

I quickly grab Riley's guitar and get the chords right.
I take a deep breath and open my mouth.

"Here I am again, the same old situation
Why does the guy thing have to be so complicated?
I should've played it cool, instead I made a fool

"I think you can make it work. Wh don't you just do music?" Josh asks.
"My mother won't ever allow it. I just... I don't know. I guess I just like it," I said.
"Well good luck. You are amazing. Very good actually," Josh said.
