A/N: Welcome to Chapter 2! ♡ (:
And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.
~Revelation 14:11
Chapter 2:
I awoke suddenly to the loud, irritating sound of silence. It was surrounding me and the area. Creeping around, not making a sound. I glanced outside my window, and the sun was beaming through my wooden framed window. No bird was chirping outside, no person was on their front porch, no body moved around the silent village. It was like this every morning.
You want to hear a bird chirp? Better keep that thought to yourself, and don't tell anyone because you will be banished.
You want to sit outside and read the paper every morning? You'll be burned.
Moral of the story, follow what everyone else is doing, and never, ever, go against it or question it.
When I finally stopped over thinking. I quickly moved my hand around under my pillow, frantically feeling for my golden compass that I had painted black when I was seven. It was just a normal compass that displayed the direction you were in. But on the side, there was a hinge; when you opened it, one wooden match fell out. A wooden match that you are given when you are born. The village blesses it, and puts it inside of the compass until you are of age.
And by 'of age', I mean on your seventeenth birthday, you go into the Christians village, you light your match, and you create the first spark and then your village follows you in attempt to burn the Christians church to the ground.
Most kids can't wait for this, but I really hate it. Yes, the Christians did trespass like a hundred years ago, but things have changed. People have changed. And my village can't accept that. It scares me knowing that I will be that person to burn down the church in two months.
My fingers twisted around the compass and I quickly pulled it out from underneath of my pillow. I glanced at it before putting it ontop of my pillow. I quietly got out of bed and walked over to my wardrobe. I pulled out a black dress, black fishnet tights, and I tossed them onto my bed.
I slid out of my black skinny jeans, still a little damp from last night, and I peeled off my black hoodie. I gently pulled the tights onto my skinny and unlovable legs, then put on the hideous dress and I let it fall down to my knees.
I pulled my book bag out from under my bed and slid a Nirvana tee shirt into it, a pair of jeans and I grabbed the compass and put it inside of the bag. I tossed it over the window ledge, and watched it land in the middle of the two rose bushes under my window. I quickly opened my door, and bolted down the stairs. I rushed by my mother who was in her worship room, but she stopped me.
"Jamie Lynn!" She called from the room. I froze in my tracks and quietly walked back to the doorframe. "Where in Lucifers name do you think you're going?!"
"Mom," I quietly explained, "I'm just going to the other side to tag some stuff, I'll be home tonight."
She gave me a stern look. "You will be tagging things all day?"
"Yes ma'am."
She hesitated then then turned back around on her knees. She sighed. "Fine. Be home by praise hour."
8 o'clock. Praise hour.
"Okay mother."
She never responded, she just ignored me and continued to worship silently. A chill ran up my spine as I shut the front door behind me. The cold morning air slapped me across the face, and I tried to ignore it, but it was so cold.
I ran over to the rose bushes and snatched my backpack up, off the ground. I unzipped the zipper and pulled out the tee shirt. I looked around to make sure nobody was looking, then I quickly pulled my dress up over my head; frazzling my hair; then slipping into the Nirvana tee. I slid off my shoes and took another glance around before removing my tights and putting on skinny jeans. I put my shoes back on and tied up the laces with shaking hands. I put the dress and tights back in the bag and slung it over my shoulders...then I bolted.
I ran and ran, as fast as I could, speeding out of the village. If anyone saw me in these clothes, I would surely be banned. Once I reached the road, I slowed down then started walking at a normal pace.
I walked along side the shoulder of the road, like always, and I saw a person approaching me. The same boy I see every day. He sneaks into my village to vandalize, and I sneak into his village to do the same. We both hate our own villages so much we just see each other and wave or say hey and let them continue on with what they're doing.
He's about 5'9" and he always wears a black toque and a black hoodie. He also carries a backpack with him. I'm always curious about what's in it. Maybe he wonders the same thing when he sees me.
I passed him today and greeted him with a smile and a nod before carrying on. But he gently touched my shoulder and held out a can of spray paint. The lid was haute pink. He pushed it a little closer to me until my hands grabbed hold of it.
"Oh," I examined the bottle, it was full. "I'm sorry, I don't have anything to trade."
"It's chill," He said, "I want you to have it." He scratched the back of his neck, reveling the outline of his biceps through his sweater. "I remember you saying you wanted this color but couldn't find it anywhere."
I smiled quickly. "Oh, well thank you."
"Anytime," a smile crept onto his face, "I guess I kinda owe ya for doing a much better tagging job then you."
"Uh!" I sarcastically exclaimed. "No way!" We both laughed together before I told him I had to go vandalize his city. He said the same thing and we headed off on our ways.
While I was walking, I kept glancing at the can of spray paint. He remembered. Thats all I could think. He cared. Wait, stop, I'm a Lucifer Girl, I shouldn't be caring or even thinking about a Christian.
I quickly put the can of spray paint into my backpack and promised myself that I wouldn't think about it for the rest of the day.
I didn't break that promise.
