Winter Flames

A loud clanging noise bursted through my bedroom door and woke me up. I sat up quite quickly and looked around at my surroundings only to notice I was alone in my room, the same way I was when I fell asleep last night.

I tiredly swung my legs to the side of the bed and to the floor and got up. Wiping my eyes and stretching a bit, I walked downstairs to find my mother picking up a shattered plate.

"Sorry hun," she said, "I just dropped a plate."

"Yeah its fine."

"I didn't wake you, did I?"

"No. I woke up a few minutes before."

"Oh, good." My mother offered a slight smile. I took it and smiled back.

"Mom,  I think I'm going to go out today."

"With whom?"

"Cameron."

"Cameron?" She said in an overprotective mother's voice.

"The Christian kid."

"Oh, I see."

"Yeah. Is that okay, mom?"

"Well I'm mortified that you insist on collaborating with a Christian male, but if you want to; who an I to hold you back?"

"Thanks, mom. And I promise no one will find out."

I turned around and bolted out the front door. The cold winter air smacked me in the face. I couldn't breathe for a second because of the sudden hit of cold air. I walked it off and made my way down the stone road and to the long pavement road.

I followed it all the way to the underground border my people made to sneak into their village. I entered it myself and said hey to the new guard on my way in. I made sure to lock the latched door behind me, and I skipped happily into the village.

So many new and different scents hit me and I saw many people wearing colorful coats and patterned hats and scarfs. No one back in my village ever wore that, we'd just carry around flames and hope to stay warm.

People appeared to be out and about today, and I knew at that moment that it's gonna be a pain in the ass to find Cameron today.

Great.
