"Are you still not going to talk to him?" I huff, throwing a French fry at Nate's face who only picks it up and shoves it in his mouth, chewing down on it happily.

Jasper sat at a table in the far corner, poking his food with a fork and staring blankly ahead. He was alone like he had been ever since his fight with Nate.

But I just couldn't understand why Nate was still being so stubborn about the situation. Jasper was only trying to help and in a way he did because now I know the truth.

Nate doesn't see it like that though.

I grab the fry out of Nate's hand and slam it on his plate. He pouts cutely. "I'm serious Nathaniel, stop being like that. He's your friend who was only trying to help."

"Did you just call me Nathaniel?" He frowns and exhales when I give him a glare that said 'seriously?' He glances over his shoulder, "he hit me did you forget?"

"Did you forget that you were the one who hit him first?" I retort, scoffing at him. Nate curses under his breath and angrily shoves another fry into his mouth.

"He's your friend Nate, don't hold what he did against him. You know he didn't do it with bad intentions." I say softly, reaching out to intertwine our hands.

Nate smiles slightly and nods. "I know, just let me do it on my own terms okay?" He asks and I can only nod in response.

Jasper passes by our table, his mind elsewhere as Nate calls out for him. "Hey dickhead!"

The standing boy chuckles, flipping Nate the bird before continuing his way out of the canteen. I glance at Nate in confusion and he simply smirks, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly.

"You guys are a weird pair." I snickered, grabbing my empty tray and stand up to leave. Nate looks up at me with amused eyes. "see you later lover boy." I winked and walked away.

I hear his melodic laughter as I walk out the doors. Jasper stands right at the side, leaned against the wall with his eyes shut closed. "did he tell you?"

"Yes, he did. I'm sorry you guys fought because of me." I say, frowning at his distressed look. He chuckles huskily.

"It was because of you. But you needed to know. I wouldn't change anything." He opens his eyes and smiles at me. "you mean a lot to him, I just wanted him to remember it."

"Nate's father. Have you met him before?" I inquired, glancing over my shoulder to make sure no one else was around. Jasper flexes his jaw and nods tightly.

"He's a piece of dirt. He's worth nothing. Nate has always despised him for abandoning his mother and he's never forgiven him. But how could he? He grew up watching how hard his mom worked just to keep a roof under his head. . ." Jasper gulps.

"I didn't know she had died until recently. I should've been there for him, should've helped him through losing the woman he loved the most in his life." He chuckles bitterly.

"That's not your fault." I assured.

"He shouldn't have gone through that alone Clary. Do you know how many times he contacted me? Asking me to meet up? I always said no or sometimes didn't even bother replying. I was terrified of what his father could do to me." He shuts his eyes and inhales sharply.
