The school bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. Today wasn't so eventful. The usual just happened where Liam was annoying me most of the time, Ryland was ignoring me like always, Zander and I were joking, and Logan was just extra shy. I guess it was the whole rumor situation that made him go back into his little turtle shell. Even when playing 21 questions with Noah, he was vague with his answers too. It's like they are keeping their guard up?
Suddenly, Mr. Eito tapped me on the shoulders. I instantly shook my head so my thoughts were back in order and then I remembered where I was. I was near my shoe locker and holding the door of it while spacing out. Looking around, I noticed everyone else in school was gone. God, why do I zone out so much?
"Excuse me, (Last Name)," Mr. Eito called out.
He stood, leaning on the lockers beside me. His eyebrows were slightly raised and his lips were pursed as if he was thinking. It took him a few seconds, but his red eyes were just piercing through mine. It was like he was reading me.
"I need help with something and since you are the only student here with no club activities, I might as well ask you," He said, tapping his fingers on his elbow.
That's when I realized the position we were in. He was pretty close to the point where I can feel him inhaling and exhaling through his nose. He was only an inch taller than me. He was pretty short yet his figure was held tall. His arms were crossed too and he held some sort of a bored expression on his face.
I slowly nodded, closing the door to the shoe locker. Mr. Eito nodded as well and walked towards his classroom. I followed behind him sheepishly. He slid open the door to his classroom and closed it behind me after I walked in. I looked around nervously, hoping this wouldn't end in some Netflix show scene.
"Alright, I just need you to help me unpack boxes of books and label the new textbooks we will use for the next lesson," Mr. Eito stated, pointing to some pile of boxes behind me.
I nodded again and began to walk to the pile. Somehow, I noticed some posters in the boxes. I raised my eyebrow at it. It didn't seem like some stupid ass "math is fun" poster or some terrible math puns. It was of some EDM artists and posters of raves. I turned to look back at Mr. Eito who was putting some books away. He then turned to me and realized what I saw. He slowly walked over towards me and picked up the poster of some rave he went to a few years ago.
"Can I tell you something I never really told anyone?" He asked.
"Sure, Mr. Eito," I responded.
He made a slight "tsk" noise.
"Call me Raiden," he said.
He seems to be getting comfortable near me. I wonder why. I mean, I just met him today.
"I don't know why I'm telling you this. I guess my gut is just telling me to," Raiden chuckled.
His chuckle was smooth yet very deep. It sounded genuine too, but it also sounded like he hasn't chuckled in forever. I stared at him, waiting for him to tell me. His eyes wandered somewhere else though, as if he couldn't bear to look at me.
"Well first off, I never really liked my last name, because of my parents. My parents were controlling growing up and I guess I just wanted to be free. I never felt satisfied or happy. Once, I snuck out and went to this concert," he paused, chuckling to himself.
His eyes turned into some sort of happiness but his lips didn't move at all. He seemed alive and happy without showing any expression at all.
"I saw the DJ and the speakers were so loud. I couldn't hear anything but the beautiful elements of the EDM song. I felt alive. Though, I knew my parents would never let me go or be free. I still couldn't let this feeling go. Nonetheless, I did what every teenager wanting to rebel did. I did things that would make them mad. I got piercings and started skipping class, but then my parents got mad. I was sent to some military camp and graduated young just so I can be this 'adult' that can help me escape. Needless to say, I didn't."
His eyes faded back to this sad look. I started to realize that the same look was one that he held today. Maybe he held the same one the rest of his life. It sure looked like that.
Suddenly, he collapsed onto his knees. His eyes started to water and his red eyes started to pour with tears. I caught him before he fully fell and he looked deep into my eyes. His head then rested on my shoulder and he cried softly. He sniffled a little bit with his breathing speeding up a lot.
"Why?" He asked me.
I pulled his head away from my shoulder and started into his eyes.
"Why what?" I questioned him, waiting for him to continue the sentence.
He stared at me with tears still falling and framing his jawline. His whole face was red and by the looks of it, he hasn't cried in a long time either.
"Why am I not good enough?" Raiden whispered.
I lowered my head and bit my lip, feeling bad for the teacher drowning me in his emotions.
"Why do I feel like I can trust you?" He asked.
I turned to look at him again. He stopped crying. His cheeks were dry now but there were still some tear drops making its way down from his chin. His eyes were even more red and his nose too. He held this look in his eyes that seemed like it just learned something.
Raiden leaned in a little. He leaned into my ear, his lips touching the tip of it. He then whispered,
"Why do I feel this way?"
