Chapter 13: Quiet Towns

I skipped this morning's meeting. I didn't think it would be too important so I stayed in bed. I know the Commander won't be pleased that I ditched it, after all, he does want me to get a promotion. I just wanted to forget that he ever asked me to progress. Staying in my warm cocoon of a bed made me feel like I really could forget about it.

The door burst open, slamming into the wall. The noise made me jump in my half asleep state.

'God! Keep it down will you?' I shouted, turning over under my warm duvet.

'Party tonight!' Sarah sang, intentionally loud.

'New recruits means big party! ...But you're not invited because you didn't come to the meeting this morning.' Sarah joked, looking up at my bunk. I fumbled around, getting my arm out of the duvet to present to her my middle finger.

'It's in the downstairs club at Groucho's. There's this new guy, Eld, he's really cute and he's gonna be there.' She rambled excitedly.

'Well, I won't be surprised to see you flirting.' I grumbled.

'Psht.' She laughed.
'Which dress should I wear?' She murmured.

'Isn't it a bit early for that?' I said, still hoping to go back to sleep.

'Nope. Maybe it would've been if you actually woke up in the morning.' Sarah said.

'Huh?'

'It's 3pm, Alyssa.' Sarah said.

Oh... I would've guessed it was 11am...

'Oh.. well... it's still a little early isn't it.' I turned over and tried to get back to sleep. I'm usually an arsehole when people wake me up prematurely. But I felt even more grouchy today. Maybe it was because of that soldier yesterday...

The dark and accepting warmth of my blankets enveloped me, drowning out my consciousness and sending me back to sleep.

And then, a loud knock on the door tore me from my dreams.

'Ugh... Oi! Who the hell is there?' I yelled, my voice hoarse.

'It's Levi.' His voice all muffled through the wooden door.

I grumbled, burying my face in my duvet, hoping he would go away. I was unsure of whether Sarah was even still in the room or not.

The door swung open, Levi stood in the doorway. He didn't seem surprised that I was prioritising my sleep over my duties.

'Hey, are you deaf or what?' He remarked.
'It'll only take a minute.'

'I don't care.' I grumbled to myself, turning over in my bed.

'You missed the meeting this morning.' Levi said as he closed the door behind him, walking further into the room.
'The Commander wanted you to debrief the mission yesterday-'

'Oh shit... Really?' I said, poking my head over the side of my bunk bed.

'Yeah.' Levi looked up at me, his arms crossed. His eyes uncaring for my bullshit.

'Never mind. You can tell him I'm in recovery or something and that's why I didn't go.' I said, throwing myself back into my bed.

'I'm not a messenger. Lie to him yourself.' Levi said, turning away. I rolled my eyes.
'And it's 5pm. Get your lazy ass out of bed.'
