Chapter 22: Sisters

Levi and I had been hauling this guy's ass away from market stalls, public parks, the river... the list goes on. He was enthralled by everything. We found out his name was Axel and as of today, his favourite activity was looking up at the sky. It felt like we were baby sitting. After we came out of the underground, we had to sit down with him for twenty minutes for his eyes to adjust to the light. In addition to being generally annoying, he didn't know how to get to the address he'd given us, so it took a lot of coordination and asking strangers for directions to get there. It quickly became clear that we were heading towards Wall Sina, and into the most prestigious areas within it. I don't go to the inner city often, but it's always nice when I do. It feels like a breath of fresh air; there are fountains and lovely parks and sculptures and art. But while it's full of wealth it's also full of corruption.

It was around 4pm now, the sun was high in the sky. We walked up a small hill where the houses were the size of hotels. This area was full of the most modern architecture, I had a feeling we were getting close.

For some reason, I wasn't nervous. Maybe it was because I was back on the surface where I felt comfortable. The open air gave me a false sense of security.

I doubted that we would find my sister today. I suspected it would take a long time to find her, seeing it is nearly impossible to find traffickers and the people they victimise.

Although... what if I do find her... even if it's not today... what then? I can't quit the Corps. And she would be an adult now...

We found the right road and walked along it, looking at the door numbers to find the right one. It took us a long time to reach it because the houses were so damn big. I couldn't understand how one person would need so much space...

The number on the paper said 6, so we kept walking until the mansion we were in front of said 6. We walked up the long front garden. My chest felt a little constricted, maybe I was getting nervous after all.

If my sister did send those men after that party... that would mean she can afford to hire those types of people... it implies that she's taking care of herself...

I walked in front of Levi and Axel. I walked up the steps to ring the door bell. As I waited in tense anticipation, I gave Levi a look that said, 'Stay out here and take care of this guy.'

I'm over thinking this. I know I am.

Levi gave me a little nod and rolled his eyes at Axel. I started to turn and face the door when Levi caught my arm.

'Here, take this. Just in case,' he said quietly, handing me the knife he had taken earlier. He held the blade between his thumb and finger, I took the wooden handle and concealed it under my sleeve, the way Levi had done before. The door opened wide to a huge marble hall behind a maid. The maid greeted me with a large smile. Her hair was tightly wrapped into a bun behind her head and she wore a short black dress.

'Hi there! How can I help you?'

'My name is Alyssa Jones. I'm here to speak to the owner of the household.' I asked politely but made sure to remain professional. I decided to pretend I was there on an investigation. It would give me a good excuse to poke around and ask questions.

The maid told us to come in and offered us drinks but I reassured her that it wouldn't take long and that Levi and Axel could wait outside. All I needed was to see the face of this 'heir' person so I could confirm whether or not it was Bailey, and if it wasn't Bailey, I could ask about her whereabouts. I didn't want this to drag on all day if it was a cold lead.
