I was playing a retro-shooting game early in the morning, with no sleep for the past three days, playing nonstop and just came out to eat, but then one day when I was playing...
"Oh dang! I only got a high score of 3232?! What a bummer..."
"ding"
Oh, look, a notification. I put down my controller and I quickly get my phone and as I open the email I received...
NEW ARRIVAL! THE BATTLE OF WARLOCKS AND DEMONS HAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN THE SHELVES OF LOCAL STORES NEAR YOU! COME ON AND GET ONE BEFORE IT ALL RUNS OUT!
"Woaaaaah! I've been waiting for this game for a long time! I must go and get it now!"
I'm Shane, I normally shut myself in at home, but unfortunately for me, I made up my mind to go out today. All to get my hands on the newly released game.
A couple of hours have passed
"Phew... A three-hour round trip! I'm glad I was able to buy it." I said as the sunlight shines on me. Ugh, the sunlight is my worst enemy after three straight all-nighters. Well, it's time to go home and try this puppy out.
A girl passes by. A girl from my school? I hear a truck honking. I look back and...
"Look out! That truck's going to—" I didn't even realize, my body moved on its own to save the girl. Why would I do something out of character, today, of all times?
My memory flashed through in my mind. From the start until now. Seeing back, I just played games all day, all night. What did I even achieve in my fifteen years of living?
After a little while, my mind went pitch black then I suddenly wake up in an unfamiliar place.
"Shane." An unfamiliar feminine voice said.
As I look back I saw a gorgeous girl, with... wait, what? Wings?! And a Halo?! Where am I?
"Welcome to the afterlife, Shane. Unfortunately, you just passed away moments ago. Your life was a short one, but you are, in fact, dead."
I didn't believe it at first, but then I realized I was hit by a truck.
"Just one question." I asked. "What about the girl I pushed?" With a worried look on my face.
"She's alive." She said.
She revealed a portal showing the girl was fine. Besides, the later events after I died, all my family members were in agony when they saw me in the hospital bed, they couldn't believe that I, a shut-in otaku to go outside and die that easily.
"Thank goodness." I replied. That means my death wasn't in vain. But I feel sorry for my family. Even though I didn't have any contribution to the family and was a headache to them, they loved and cared for me.
"By the way Mr. Shane, I'm Laishi, the goddess of the afterlife, the one who guides humans who die young to the afterlife. Now you have two choices, you can start from square one with a new life, or you can go to Heaven and carry on like an old man. To tell you the truth, Heaven isn't the dreamy place you all imagine it to be."
"Huh?" I confusingly replied. I had no idea what she was talking about but she continued to talk about it.
"Not only there's no TV, but there are also no manga or games too. You don't even have a physical body, so you can't do anything sexually either. There's nothing to do there but bask in the sun for all of eternity" she said while doing an indecent gesture in front of me.
"What?!" I screeched as I was flustered.
"So... you don't want to go to a boring place like Heaven, do you?"
"Um, right..." I didn't understand anything she said but I comprehended some of it.
"On the other hand, starting over from square one isn't so fun either. On that note, I've got a great offer for you!" She exclaimed.
"What is it?"
"You like playing games, don't you?" As she closes into me with her arms crossed with a smirk on her face.
"Huh? U-Um, yes definitely!" It was a forced answer, but I guess I could give it a shot. I can finally face the life of what I've experienced in games.
"This world, which has long enjoyed peace, is being threatened by the Demon King's army. The livelihoods its citizens have worked for are being trampled by monsters. Everyone lives in fear of the Demon King's armies' merciless pillage and slaughter!" As she summoned a hologram of the armies endless slaughter in the villages.
Gulp
"Since that's the sort of world it is, everyone refuses to be reborn, so the population is declining."
"I see..." I nod at her.
"So we decided, why not send people who've died in their previous lives there with their bodies and memories intact?"
"What's the point in sending me there if I'm just going to be killed?"
Why would I go into a world with no stamina and endurance? I've been in my room for years and didn't even go out to play with friends, well I did play with some friends, in online games that is, that is considerable, is it?
"That's why I'm doing you a big favor. I will grant you with physical and intellectual abilities to help you out and even grant you a mysterious power that you should unlock to unleash its true potential. You'll be able to redo your life with all your original memories intact. Besides, the people of the parallel world will earn someone battle-ready to help them fend off the evil. Not a bad deal, don't you think?"
That is good, but a mysterious ability for me to unlock? Sounds exciting but there are still questions in my head... More specifically...
"Um, I would like to ask a question. Will I be able to speak this world's language?"
"That won't be an issue." She said as she held out a book which seems to look like a dictionary, for the other world's language, I guess?
"With the kind support of us Gods, we'll overload your brain so you'll be able to learn it instantly!" As she gave me a huge book. I thought it was heavy but I could carry it easily, is this what Goddess's powers can do?
"Really?" I said in excitement.
"Of course. Have you decided to go to this parallel world?"
"Yeah! I would love to!"
It would be a good experience and to show off what I've learned in the games I've played.
"Now, Brave Hero, I pray that of a great many prospective heroes, you will be the one to defeat the Devil King. If you do so, we shall grant you any wish you so may desire as a gift from the Gods."
"Woah, for real?!" She nodded and then opened a portal above us and it sucked me in. I gave my goodbyes to the Goddess.
"Now, go forth on your journey, brave hero!"
As we gave our goodbyes I instantly vanished. The portal closed in as I already entered the said parallel world.
I look around and was amazed at what I saw...
It was unbelievable...
