"I remember you."
The words were soft, whispered in the melody of the night, but they rang like bells in Taehyung's ears. He had heard it; every syllable and echo reached his ears as if it was the only thing he could hear. As if they weren't standing in the middle of a firework display, but in a void of silent noises. The words danced in his head like flames, spreading over his conscious like a fire that he couldn't distinguish. The phrase thrusted itself against his person, demanding understanding and recognition, and the older let it, allowing himself to decipher it, like it was a code.
The answer was clear, but foggy at the same time. Probably because it couldn't be possible. It was almost too far from the truth. Too far from reality.
"I remember you, Tae." Jungkook spoke, drawing the older's attention towards him once again. Taehyung noticed that the younger was still crying, but the soft smile on his face wiped every appearance of sadness off his face. His eyes were still looking up at him, gleaming with life and glowing faint colors of orange. His hands were still holding him, brushing the skin on his cheeks and neck gently. And it was then that the older noticed the things he had ignored. He could see the younger's features clearly, under a different perspective. He could map his similar smile to the boy in his memories face. He could see familiarity in his eyes and identicality in his nose, however, he also noticed the differences. Noticed how much smaller Jungkook's features were in comparison, or how his lips appear slightly thinner, his skin paler and his face shape slightly less defined but more round.
"I remember us." The younger had whispered once again, equally as shocked as the older because he had found it hard to believe, but his heart knew the truth. His body saw the possibilities and as Jungkook had listened to the song Taehyung had sang to him, he felt the seal of the cage in his mind break, and he started to notice that he had been receiving his past memories for a while now in the form of a dream or as feelings. He began to understand that since the time he had been awoken from his long slumber, he had begun to recall many things that he, at the time, didn't understand. They were no names to the silhouettes he dreamt about or the faces to the shadows he saw, however, at this moment, like a trigger, the memory of a melody so significance to his person had awoken his dormant mind, freeing everything that had been locked away in the dark, cobweb-filled chamber of his conscious.
He remembered.
Slowly, he brought both his hands to the older's face, tears still streaming down his cheeks. His lips wobbled slightly as he watched Taehyung, heart beating loudly in his chest as the feeling of overwhelmingness washed over him. Everything had hit him like a truck, falling on him like rain, drenching him in past emotions, feelings, thoughts and memories. It had crashed into him, forcing him to remember the man in front of him. He remembered the smiles they shared, the innocent and passionate touches, the love that bloomed flowers in spring and their dreams that were so farfetched, but still worth having. He had remembered how he used to hold the older who, at the time, was smaller than him. How Taehyung felt in his arms and how soft his skin was to touch. He recalled the late night chats the two had and the way Jungkook would kiss the older, holding him as they stared up at the sky.
"I l..love you"
"I love you too."
He remembered the way the older's eyes had sprung to life as they sat in front of his piano, playing nonsensical music like there was no tomorrow...
"We should write a song."
"Pff, a song, as if you can sing Tae."
"I do, Kook! you're the one who sounds like a pregnant hunchback man giving birth to a whale."
