Hello everyone. I'm working on the next chapter, but a lot has been on my mind and it's slowed the process a bit. I'm sure that many of you, like myself, read fiction as a way to escape things that we might not enjoy that much in real life. So I'll apologize ahead of time for injecting some of the real world in here, but I just felt like I wanted to say some things.
As many of y'all know, writers are able to see a break down of where their readers are on wattpad. I was shocked, and humbled, to see that people from all over the world have read what I've written. I honestly never thought I would be able to interact with people from all over. My message today, however, is to the readers from Brazil and New Zealand.
While violence is not unique to any geographic location, religion, or ethnicity, the types of violence that you have faced this past week--school shootings and white supremacy--feel distinctly American. I grieve that this is what we're exporting to the rest of the world, and I can only hope that you and your politicians are better able to deal with it than ours have been.
I hope that none of you have been directly touched by this violence, but I know--from ample experience--that even when these types of things do not touch us directly, the shock and horror and sorrow are still very real. Schools and places of worship should be safe. They should be places where people feel free to exist how they are and learn who they want to be. I know that my thoughts and love change nothing, but I offer them none the less.
Please be safe, hug your loved ones, and continue doing the things you enjoy. Enjoy school and practice your religion unapologietically. Do not be afraid to demand action from your politicians. You will have support.
All my love,
Jasnah
