I only own Cassandra.
“Mother?” Rumple asked after a moment. Pan chuckled.
“That she is.” Cassandra turned to look at her son, who gave her an annoyed glance. “Unfortunately.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“I want to change the game. Make it the way I want, live the way I want to.”
The girl shook her head. “You could have done that in Neverland!”
“No,” Pan replied, frowning. “Not with you. Not with my mother, the one who abandoned me, watching me.”
“Do you even know why I abandoned you, Malcolm?”
“Don’t call me that,” growled Pan. Cassandra furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
“Malcolm?”
“It’s Peter Pan now.”
The girl sighed and looked down at her locket. “I see. Well, Peter, at least allow me to explain myself.”
Rumple looked from his father to his grandmother. Something told him that this wasn’t going to be good.
“When I was Queen of Neverland,” Cassandra began, “I was quite lonely. Children visited, but I had no permanent friend to be with me. And then I found your father. We fell in love-“
Pan scoffed. The girl looked at him and sighed.
“And he became my King. And when I was pregnant with you, he got sick. Very sick. He would never see his son be born.”
“How did he get sick?” Pan asked. He knew the answer already.
“I am not sure. No one had ever seen the disease before.”
“Perhaps it was a dark poison.”
“Perhaps it wa-“ Cassandra stopped mid-sentence. “How would you have any idea what dark poison is? The realm I sent you had never seen anything like that, either.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Pan smirked.
“Do you know something about your father’s death?”
“All I know is that the Shadow poisoned him,” he replied casually. Cassandra took a step back.
“Poisoned?” Her eyes began to grow glossy. “The Shadow was responsible for Lysander’s death?”
Rumple watched as Pan raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps.”
“Did he tell you this?”
“How else would I know?” Pan asked. “He also told me the real reason you sent me away.”
“And what’s that?” Cassandra held back her tears.
“You couldn’t stand the sight of me. You tossed me aside like trash, only concerned about your dead husband. And you killed the Shadow’s family.” He glared at his mother.
She shook her head. “I may have banished the Shadow creatures, but I didn’t kill them. And he tricked you. I never sent you away because I was ashamed of you. I sent you away because it was for your own good. If someone got to you, they would find out who you were, who I was. And they would hold it against us. Neverland would be in danger, it would be destroyed. I couldn’t take that risk. I had to send you away so you could have your best chance.”
“Is that the reason for everything around here?” Pan pointedly looked at the frozen figures of Emma, Snow, and the others.
“It’s a good reason,” Cassandra argued. She stepped forward to her son, examining his face. “You… you have his eyes. I never noticed that.”
