'We're gonna make super magic for the tube, and we'll do it together.'
                                         Elvis Presley.

Elvis's triumphant seasons in Vegas in 1969 and 1970 led to nationwide touring, seeing Elvis playing one sold-out arena after another. Taking his success to even greater heights, but a deal made in 1973 would see Elvis make television history.

The setting was nothing less than spectacular: a packed arena bathed in night-time air, Elvis's name depicted in various styles and transformed into lights above the stage.

Once the plans got under way, Elvis threw himself into preparations with gusto, for the first time in months Elvis was invigorated, even designing his own stage outfit.

Bill Belew had been given free rein on all Elvis's costume designs since the '68 comeback special, but this time it was different. Elvis wanted his costume to be something special.

What better motif than the patriotic American Eagle. Belew created one of Elvis's trademark jumpsuits for the occasion, as well as a calf-length Cape emblazoned with the jewel-encrusted American Eagle motif.

When Elvis tried the Cape on the day before the show, it was so heavy he couldn't move in it, so Belew made another, shorter version.
