'When we pulled up at the county jail and walked in through the back door. A sergeant at the Main desk looked up and, without missing a beat, asked, 'Elvis-what are you doing here?'
'We thought we'd come visit you guys,' Elvis responded.
The cops on duty were thrilled and started gathering around our group. We talked with them for a while, and then Elvis decided he wanted to visit the prisoners. We got the okay, though for obvious reasons the women weren't going to be allowed back in the cell area with us.
Elvis seemed perfectly relaxed and even happy walking down that long corridor, the guys in their cells started springing to life and yowling in delight:
'Hey Elvis!'
'Elvis, can Ihave a cadillac?'
'Elvis, will you be my lawyer?'
Elvis was laughing and shaking hands with the guys through the bars of their cells (something he'd been asked not to do.)
We were slowly working our way past the rest of the cells when another voice rang out. 'George Klein!' I couldn't imagine who would be calling for me instead of Elvis, but the voice continued.
'Humes High, Elvis-it's me! Harold Poole!'
'Aww, Harold,' Elvis said. 'What are you doing here?'
'Well, I got in a little barroom fight, Elvis, that's all,' said Harold. 'But Elvis-could you please help me get out of here?'
'Well, you've got to behave yourself, Harold.'
'I will Elvis, I will.'
'GK,' Elvis said. 'Go and tell the guys out front that I'll put up Harold's bond, and they can let him out.'
I was back in a few moments to tell Elvis what I'd heard: Harold couldn't be processed that night, but they'd let him go in the morning.
Elvis went back over to Harold's cell. 'You'resettled up, they'll let you out in the morning.
'Thank you, Elvis, and God bless you,' said Harold.
Knowing he could help people is what truly made Elvis happiest.'
