"What are you doing here?"
"I'm Yoongi hyung's brother," he replied. I was too shocked to say anything. "Isn't this his friend's house?" He asked, noticing my silence.
"His friend," I repeated, "is my brother." This time he was too shocked to reply. "Come inside."
He slowly entered, and was greeted by both of our elder brothers. "Jungkook-ah! Long time no see," said Jin oppa.
But he could only think of one thing right now.
"You have a sister?" Jin oppa was taken aback by this unusual greeting but still managed to say, ''You didn't know?"
Yoongi oppa gave the answer instead. "I don't think he's seen Yerin in the times he came here. And he hasn't come here for a long time."
Jin oppa nodded. "Well, now you two know each other."
Mr. Jeon corrected him and said, "Actually, we've known each other for about a month now."
Both of our brothers were surprised at that. The other two, who were hearing our odd conversation intently, joined us. "Have you been dating or what?" Namjoon oppa asked playfully.
"No!" I said quickly. "He's my boss." All of their mouths fell open.
"And she's my personal secretary," he summed it up.
Hoseok oppa was the first one to speak after that, "Kinky," he muttered under his breath.
"Wow, it really is a small world," said Namjoon oppa.
"Jungkook, you should have dinner," Jin oppa said, and shot a suggestive look at me.
''This way,'' I said, and he followed me towards the dining room.
As I started to serve him food, my mind wandered off to oblivion.
How come they're brothers when there's so much difference between them? Now that I think about it, they don't even share the same surname. Min Yoongi and Jeon Jungkook.
Ugh, Why did I ever promise Hoseok oppa I'd keep him company and have dinner with him?
I checked the time, and realized that I had to have dinner now.
Besides, I'm hungry.
So, I took some food for me and reluctantly sat across him on the table. An awkward silence grew between us. Moreover, there was a serious tension in the air that I couldn't explain. I didn't understand if I should break the silence or let it be.
But he saved me the trouble and blurted out, "It's weird."
I asked him, "What is?"
"I've been to this very house so many times, yet I neither saw you nor heard about you," he explained.
''I didn't know Yoongi oppa had a brother, either," I admitted.
"That's natural. We're... half-brothers," He said, with a bit of hesitation in his voice.
"Oh." Just as I thought.
I felt the need to change the topic of conversation, and the only suitable thing I could think of at the moment was work.
"Sir, I've finished the reports for the upcoming project of the planning department. Do you want to take it with you for a recheck?"
"There's no need for that. I trust you." Why is my heart beating so fast? There must have been something in my expression, because he immediately added, "I mean, I trust your work."
"If you say so." My voice sounded weirdly silent.
"It's the first time I come to your house, Yerin. At least, it is to you." The way he said my name made a shiver run down my spine. "And, the first thing you talk to me about is work?" He laughed.
A smile made its way onto my lips, too. "Must be the first time for you," I said, feeling a lot more comfortable.
"I assume you heard about Jimin hyung and Minji?" He asked.
"Yeah, I did. So did Taehyung," I answered.
''So, you're on first-name-basis with him?"
For a second, I thought I heard the same seriousness in his voice, as the one I found in Taehyung's a few hours ago.
"We're friends," I shrugged.
"I see."
After finishing eating, he joined the others and chatted with them for a while.
While leaving, Yoongi, Namjoon and Hoseok oppa hugged me and said goodbye.
While they were talking with Jin oppa, Mr. Jeon said to me, "Come to my office with the reports, Yerin. I'll see you tomorrow."
One thing was for sure — a new, friendly side of him had opened to me tonight.
-
The first thing I noticed when I entered the office the next day was the lovey-dovey thing that was going on between Jimin and Minji.
Well, it wasn't unexpected.
Luckily, I had Taehyung to talk to, and didn't feel like the third wheel. The only problem was, whenever we talked, Hyeri shot me death glares.
But did I care? Of course not.
As I entered the CEO'S office, yesterday's memories rushed into my mind. I remembered the way his friendly side had come out.
"Ms. Kim."
"Good morning, sir."
His lips formed, yet again, a smirk. He asked, "Or should I call you Yerin, like yesterday?"
Or maybe he hadn't changed at all.
I could have scoffed or something but I decided to go with the truth and said, "Whatever you want, sir."
"Alright, Yerin. As I said, I don't think it's necessary for me to review the reports. So, please hand them over to the planning department, where they belong."
I responded with a nod, and said, "I will."
He continued, "I think you've done enough with the planning department. It's time that you did what you joined this company for," he paused and then finished, "From now on, you'll be handling my affairs only."
Why is that so? Is it just because I'm the sister of his brother's best friend?
"With all due respect, sir, if that's because our brothers are friends, then, please know that I don't want to get any extra facilities because of that," I said. "I'll take my leave now."
Even though I didn't know back then, the words had caught him off-guard. Because although I'd long left, he stood still staring into space like I was there while a single word escaped his lips.
"Interesting.''
