She was dead. Crystal, my best friend and roomate. Dead. I felt empty. No tears left to shed. Only empty hollow pain and and incredible grief that I couldn't describe. I had to get out of here.
* * * * *
I got on the subway and decided to get off at a random stop. I sat down, plugged in my headphones and listened to "Cool Kids" by Echosmith. As I hummed along, I saw a guy staring at me. He smiled and kept on staring. I stared right back, and he grinned. He was pretty cute. Blonde hair, green eyes, nice smile...
- snap out of it! - I muttered.
And went back to my music. "...and he said, I wish that I could be like the cool kids cuz all the cool kids they seem to fit in I wish that I could be like the cool kids like the cool kiids..."
I got off at a random street and saw the guy come out after me. This kind of creeped me out and I walked faster. The guy picked up his pace and I decided to wait and see what he wanted. I stopped and he walked towards me.
- Hey - He said.
I just stared.
- I'm Aaron. -. he said. - I saw you on the subway and I was wondering if you'd like to go out some time? - he asked
- Now's not a really good time. And you could be a serial killer for all I know. -. I said.
He laughed, saw my serious expression and his smile faltered. I walked away.
- WAIT! He said. Here's my number. Just in case. -. He said.
- In case what? - I said annoyed.
- In case hell freezes over and you change your mind -. he said cheerfully.
I laughed and immediately regreted it when a smug smile crept across his face.
- You know if you ever did change your mind I know this great little coffee house close to my apartment. They have really nice scones and cannolis. Did I mention I love cannolis? funny story that one. It was sunday and I was with my dad and..- He said.
I threw my hands up in surrender.
- FINE I'll go out with you just STOP TALKING already! - I said.
- YESSS! -. he screamed throwing punches in the air and jumping up and down. - Friday at six? -. he asked.
- Sonds good. I'll call you later and figure out the details - I said in monotone.
- Okay, perfect. - He said.
And with that, the hollowness returned and I walked away. I didn't care if the stranger on the subway was potentially dangerous. Maybe that was just what I needed...
