We had remained on the island of birth for several days, giving both my children, and myself, time to recover from our ordeal fully. While we could not yet see the coastline of our intended destination, I, along with my five dragons, could sense that we were getting closer. Perhaps within a day or so's flight from the island on which I gave birth to my son, and my daughter.
"Jessica, a word, please." Tahli said as she cleaned a fish that May had caught moments prior.
I stood from where I sat, dangling my legs from the cliffs edge as my children slept within the long, lush grass beside me. Taking care not to forget them there, I picked the two of them up and made my way over to Tahli. Upon reaching her, I set my children down between my legs as I sat down, still watching Tahli clean the large fish.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"Not at the moment, I'm just slightly concerned for the safety of your children." She replied.
I cocked one of my eye brows.
"Oh? Why is that?" I asked.
Tahli Sighed.
Your children are less than a week old, and already, the two of them seem to have been selected by one of the last five dragons alive. The smallest, and the youngest. You have seen what has become of every dragon that has existed since the time of the first war, and what has happened to the vast majority of all those who bonded with one or more of the creatures at any point in their lives. Death. Untold amounts of it. I fear that by forming any kind of bond with a dragon at their young age, your children may be destined to die in war, or at the very least, know nothing other than pain and suffering for all time." She said.
I pondered for a moment, looking down at my two children as they slept in the grass.
"May never flies into a fight on her own. She always has at least one of the adults with her." I replied.
Tahli looked up sharply.
"They aren't adults. They're mere teenagers. The oldest, and largest dragons counted well over one-hundred years. Even the oldest three, and the largest of the five, are less than thirty twenty-five years old, two of them, even younger. They may be enormous, and formidable, but do not allow yourself to forget, that they are still incredibly young, immature, and inexperienced. They could easily fall at any time. You may love them all with everything you have within you, but now, you have two children of your own blood. Do not forget this. They must always come first."
For a moment, neither of us said anything, though it seemed as though our brief discussion had woken James from his sleep. Surprisingly, the child did not cry, but rather glance up at me with his tiny eyes. His sister remained asleep however, far less irritable than her twin brother.
"They really are adorable little things..." Tahli said as she began removing the meat from the bones of the fish.
I chuckled.
"Much like the dragons were when they were born. I remember Veracon seemed to be the most docile and timid, your dragon, Ragon, preferred to keep to himself, until he met you at least. Doron however, seemed to have a constant thirst for blood. Now, they have grown into the most incredible, mysterious creatures that the world has ever seen, for the first time in hundreds of years." I replied.
Just as I finished my rather lengthy statement, Magar flew over head, before diving over the cliff at the water below, and emerging with a dolphin gripped firmly in her teeth. Within a mere second, the aquatic creature disappeared down Magar's gullet, all the while the purple dragon continued to soar on the ocean breeze, reducing the need for her to flap her wings.
"Jessica! I've got something for you!" Amy shouted.
I turned around as she walked up, holding a series of straps, tangled around her arms.
"I pulled them from some of the sacks we carried along with us. Hopefully they'll be enough." She said.
I bent down to pick my children up from the grass, and pressed the two of them up against my chest. Amy wrapped the four straps around my body, securing them around my children's bodies before fastening them behind my back. I cautiously removed my hands from their supporting positions, and when it became clear that the straps would support my children's weight, I let my arms fall down to my sides.
"Well, this should work then. Nice thinking." I said.
Tahli nodded in agreement.
"Well then, I'd say we get back on the wing. I sense that we're getting close. I say we finish it." She said.
