Both sides of the battle fell completely silent, all the while the horses came to a stop, looking up at the sky from which the sounds had just come. I felt my heart beating through my ribs as I panned my head around, searching for safety.
"Come on, come on, show yourself." I whispered.
I could see the Marvin soldiers doing the same as me, though they were clearly unsure of what was happening. Up until that point, they had never seen a dragon. Now, that would change as Doron dropped out of the clouds far off behind me, flying over our heads as he roared at his new targets. We all watched silently as Doron spat black and red streams of fire down on the terrified Marvin soldiers, all the while they made pointless attempts to bring the dragon down with gunshots. After a third pass, he pitched up and turned back towards us, screaming out in our direction before once again attacking the now fleeing Marvin's. It seems as though Doron's surprise attack had motivated the remaining men, because seemingly all at once, they broke out once again into a sprint on horseback towards what remained of the Marvin soldiers.
I drew my bow and fired as Doron flew right over my head once again. I watched the arrow find its mark in the back of a fleeing soldier, all the while Doron continued slaughtering thousands upon thousands of soldiers with his fire. We took care to stay far enough back as to avoid the lethal flames spraying down from the sky above. Tahli rode past me as she fired an arrow, but just as she released it, her horse whined and dropped to the ground after taking a gunshot to the chest-throwing Tahli through the grass.
"Whoa whoa whoa!" I exclaimed as my horse came to a stop.
I jumped from my horse and ran to Tahli as she stood to her feet.
"You alright?" I asked as I put both of my hands on her shoulders.
She nodded.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She replied as she threw her bow up over her shoulder.
Just as she finished her sentence, Doron let out a roar as he spat yet another stream of flames down on our enemies below. His wings all but blocked out the sun at his back as he passed in front of it, the smoke rising from the ground below swirling through the air with every powerful flap. I nearly forgot about danger that surrounded me, before a horse the passed the two of us on the left. The horse took four shots to the chest and head, dropping it to the ground and crushing its rider. Another rider on the opposite side of us took a shot to the gut, knocking him from his sprinting horse as it carried on, riderless.
"Come on, you'll ride with me." I said as I lead Tahli back to my horse, ignoring the sounds of war and dragons filling my ears.
The sound of Doron's roars and screeches were deafening, no matter how custom they were to us. For a moment after he arrived, I feared for his life, but it became rather apparent in very little time that I had no need to be fearful.
The two of us mounted the horse, and started back into the fighting as we pursued the Marvin soldiers. But, they could not escape the flames of the dragon. Doron suddenly landed amidst the terrified soldiers, breathing fire and whipping his tail back and forth, cutting down thousands of men with little to no effort before taking off once again. Tahli and I fired every last arrow we had as Doron continued his assault from the sky, before suddenly pitching up and flying back into the clouds, out of sight. I paid it no mind, and continued until every last Marvin soldier had been killed, one way or another.
"We have won!" One of the commanders shouted as he raised his sword high above his head.
Cheers erupted through the army of men as horse whined and men cried out in relief. The four of us did the same, but our cheers of gratitude and victory were quickly cut short by the sound of dragon wings beating against the air once again. I looked over my shoulder, and watched as Doron flew over our army, looking right down at me as he circled around, before landing.
Everyone again fell silent as the black dragon stared down at us, not making but a single movement. He kept his eyes locked on me as I dismounted my horse, and made my way through the warriors as they looked up at him. As I approached, he followed me with his eyes. I smiled as I walked up, before stopping and locking eyes with him.
"You know you should have stayed behind with the others." I shouted to him.
He just kept his eyes locked on mine, before raising his head to look over the army of men watching our exchange. I heard footsteps coming towards me, and as such, I turned to confront those who approached me. There was no threat however, as it was simply Amy, Tahli, and Bailey. Tahli gave me a nod, coupled with a grin, which I gladly returned. I turned back to Doron and Made my way up his wing, coming to stop on the top of his enormous head.
"My brothers! I have flown for nearly a year across the sea to a land I did not know to aid you in your war against those who dream of tyranny. Now, you have witness the power of one of the five dragons I have brought with me! Are you impressed?! Are you relieved?! Do you wish to see this war fought by men on horseback, dying helplessly? Or would you rather see your enemies burn?!" I shouted.
For a moment, the army went silent.
"The dragon master!" One man shouted from within the crowd.
"Aye! The dragon master! Hail the dragon master!" Another shouted in reply.
Slowly, more and more men started chanting the phrase 'hail the dragon master'. Before long, the phrase was being chanted all across the army of men who looked up at the dragon and I as we towered over them. I felt a feeling of warmth and pride go through my body, as Doron looked up at the sky, and let out a triumphant roar that carried out to the horizon.
