CHAPTER NINE: THE PUNISHMENT

JONAH'S POV:
my feet tap uncontrollably as I sit in the waiting room outside the principals office, I can't help but think that I'm going to be in a lot of trouble but all that matters to me is that Billie won't. I don't regret what I did for her.

Mrs Dahl: Jonah, the principal is ready to see you now
Jo: thank you Mrs Dahl

I slowly get up and walk shakily to the door. I walk through the door and see the headmistress, principal Mendes, sitting behind her large desk with a stern look on her face. I'm not surprised as it is very uncommon for her to smile, she used to be very nice but then all of a sudden something changed and no one knows what. She became very depressed and strict. She motions for me to come in and take a seat so I do.

Jo: good morning...p-principal Mendes
I say stuttering from nervousness
P M: ahh...Mr Marais, let's get right to it shall we. So you claim that this story about your bike is true?
My heart skips a beat...I'm about to lie to the principal
Jo: y-yes
She looks at me as if trying to figure something out. I get nervous but don't dare to break eye contact because that would show that I'm lying. Eventually she stops and breaks the silence
P M: alright then, I am a fair principal and I see no reason to punish you for this inconvenience
I make no effort to hid e the relief in my face
P M: however...
My heart sinks, I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up
P M: according to Mrs V- I mean Siniora Vellenuava, you have been arriving late to her Spanish class multiple times and you have not been completing assignments...is this true?
Jo: yes ma'am I have arrived late but it was only a few times and it was due to oversleeping. As you know music and singing lessons take up most of my time due to the varsity scholarship and as for the assignments I try getting as much done but I often have music till very late in the evening.
P M: well Mr Marais I do understand that you are one of the best musicians Ridgewood High has but you need to stop putting music before your academics
Jo: yes ma' am
P M: I'm soy but you will be receiving a 2 week internal suspension starting tomorrow in which during this time you'll finish any incomplete assignments and I'm sorry but you won't be allowed to participate in any musical activities during your suspension
Jo: wait but-
P M: I will speak to the scholarship board and explain your situation...hopefully this time won't affect your scholarship
Jo: principal Mendes please-
P M: dismissed
Jo: yes ma'am

And with that I knew the conversation was over for good. I rose from my seat making no effort to hide my disappointment.

BILLIE'S POV:
The bell rings for the end of class. Everyone starts leaving the classroom and Siniora V calls me to her desk so I tell Zee to wait for me outside. I nervously walk up to her desk

B: Siniora...you wanted to see me?
S V: Billie
She says with a sigh of disappointment
S V: here's your detention slip
B: Siniora I am so sorry...I really didn't mean to come so late
S V: I am disappointed but...just make sure it doesn't happen again
B: it won't, I promise
S V: good, dismissed.
B: grasious

I grab my detention slip and exit as quickly as I can. I see Zee frustratingly tapping her foot from anger. I love her to bits but...do I really have to deal with this now?!

Ze: what the fuck happened to you?! You're mom called me last night and said you didn't come home and I was like what! And-
She says this so fast I could barely catch a word
B: language and I'm fine
Ze: you better start talking coz you know I don't but that bike shit for a second
B: language and it was nothing I promise I'm fine. Jonah and I just...accidentally fell asleep at the beach last night
Ze: what?! How do you accidentally fall asleep on the beach what did you bring a bed with you?
B: haha very funny
I say I'm the most sarcastic way
Ze: wait...why were you at the beach with Jonah in the first place?
B: okay I'll tell you but...promise me you won't freak out
Ze: whatever just talk!
