Chapter Eighteen
"He and his family." I lied.
"Oh, okay." He seemed to buy my fib. "And they're from England? Or..."
"They're from Ireland."
"But they're in New Jersey, and they're going to England?"
"Yes."
"Why are they going to England?"
"Cuz they've never been and they want me to go with them to see it cuz I've never been either."
"Right..." He seemed sceptical but he looked like he didn't care enough to ask for the truth.
We were quiet the rest of the ride there.
"Go around back." I said. "I don't want to walk through all the patients."
"Alrighty." He did as told and pulled up by the back door and put the car in park.
"Have fun in England with your Irish boyfriend." He jokingly mocked as I got my stuff out of the back seat.
"Yea, thanks." I laughed.
He smiled.
"Dan, right?" I asked.
"Yea, buddy." He quoted one of my favourite reality shows.
I laughed. "How much?"
"Don't worry about it." He smiled.
I smiled back. "Thanks. I'll have to ask for you the next time I need a cab."
"Yes ma'am." He smiled.
I laughed.
"Bye now." He said as I shut the door.
"Bye." I waved as he drove away.
I turned around and my mum was standing at the door. She had her whole life in her arms. Her purse, lunch bag, coat, umbrella (I wasn't quite sure why she had an umbrella because it was the most beautiful day of the year so far), a sweater, rubber boots, and something else that I'd never seen before.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Never mind, just get in the car."
"Okay." I turned around and started walking towards her car.
She grabbed my arm and hugged me, all of her crap included. I hugged her back and tried to ignore the miscellaneous object that was stabbing into my ribs.
"I love you." She said.
"I love you too."
"Okay. Now get in." She said after a few minutes.
I got in the front seat. She started the car and we drove away.
"Mum, I really am sorry."
"I know." She said. "I'm not mad."
"Thank you for doing this for me."
"You're welcome."
I smiled. The airport was in East London and my mum worked downtown so it was about a fifteen-minute drive, most of which was silent. I was texting Niall.
"Where are you?"
He asked.
"Almost to the airport."
"Okay."
"What time does your plane land, again?"
"6:00."
He reminded me.
"Right. I'll try to get on a plane that lands right around then."
"Okay. Aim for one that lands after 6:00, that way you won't be at the airport alone."
