Plot: Sanem and Emre are best friends but their dynamic is changed when Can makes a dramatic entrance into both of their lives (part four)
Sanem raced home with a frenzy of thoughts on her mind - was Emre okay? Was Can okay after her skipping out on him so quickly? Was she okay? Regardless of how amazing everything was with Can, Sanem's conscious was ever-present and thinking of how Emre would feel once he found out about them.
Naturally, Sanem turned her head to look at Can. After trying to get her attention silently, he'd turned his attention solidly to the road. There was a poker face plastered across his face and Sanem desperately wanted to know what he was thinking of. The thought of having angered or upset him made her heart sink. She'd never felt anything like this before and it was strange: the worry, the fret, the second-guessing. Sanem was certain, now more than ever, that whatever she was doing with Can wasn't just a fling. She cared. He cared. But she knew all of her thoughts about a pursuing a relationship with Can would have to wait until she found about what was going on with Emre.
"Huma Aunty-" Before Can could park up in front of the haphazardly, Sanem was already throwing her door open and making a run for it. However, Can stalled his entry into the house in order to avoid suspicious from his mother, who he had learnt was incredibly vigilant. "Is he okay? What's going on?"
"He's in his room." From the look on Huma's face, it was evident that nobody in the Divit household was currently feeling too good. Before Sanem could sprint off into the direction of her best friend's room, Huma caught her wrist. "Sanem, thank you for being there for my son-"
At first, Sanem panicked - she wasn't sure what son that Huma was referring to for a split second before she simply nodded.
"Emre?" Sanem knocked on his door lightly before peaking her head around to find him sat on the edge of his bed, looking out at their endless stretch of green grass in the back yard. "Emre, are you okay?"
"Come, Sanem." He pat the spot next to him and his childhood friend didn't need to be told twice. She readily took the spot beside him, her eyes scanning him in worry. His face looked as if it had aged ten-odd years in the space of a few hours and his eyes were blood shot, like he'd been drinking or crying ... or both.
"Emre, will you tell me what's going on?" Sanem adjusted her position so that she was sat cross-legged, her whole body turned towards him rather than the view out the window.
"Do you remember when we were kids and we used to have fake weddings?" Emre's eyes glazed over with a sense of nostalgia, his words sending Sanem on a backward trajectory too. "And we used to be the bride and groom, pretend to have children-" Their little role-plays had been a staple of her childhood, patterned with all things imaginative, from them being government spies to being famous footballers; Sanem's favourite had always been the latter. She loved sprinting around the grass before them, running to and fro after a little ball. Her mother had hated how boy-ish and rugged it made her. Sanem always ended up with mud on her shorts and grazes on her knees. But, on the other hand, unlike his best friend, Emre's favourite role-play had always been the happy families one.
"Yeah?" Sanem rested a hand against Emre's arm, her thumb stroking him gently whilst her eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
"We were so happy then." He spoke solemnly, desperate for those times to return. "You know why I always liked those ones?" Sanem just nodded, encouraging him to continue. "Because even then, I knew that was what I always wanted to happen someday."
As Emre spoke, Sanem felt her body go rigid. His words were elusive and vague and she wasn't sure what exactly he meant by them. Was he confessing the thing that many outsider's had seen coming? His love for her? Nobody had hesitated to share how they thought that Sanem and Emre would one day end up together. People always said they were too close for comfort and that boy-girl friendships like theirs just didn't exist, despite both Emre and Sanem's refusal. They had always been just friends. There had been no signs of anything romantic prior to this moment and that terrified Sanem. Because if Emre really was confessing his love to her, she knew - without a doubt - that she would not be able to reciprocate his feelings. She loved him, of course she did, but like a brother and a friend ... nothing more.
