Thanks to Julian I hadn't been left completely stranded after the lacrosse game, he'd drove me home immediately which I was grateful for, though I'm not certain I told him so. In fact, I'm not certain I said a word the whole way home.
My mind was a whirlwind of chaos and I still felt on the defense, unsure whether I could let my guard down and relax seeing as Grayson, while clearly off put by today's disastrous events, was still technically speaking to me and that was a win in itself.
I'd been home thirty four minutes before I heard anything from Grayson. I know this because I really was watching the clock, waiting. Still, I was surprised he was calling so quick.
I answered immediately.
"Grayson." I said, relieved and feeling somewhat breathless.
"I found the USB." He stated, his voice portrayed the same quiet moodiness I'd heard less than an hour ago.
"What?" I felt as though my heart was on a roller coaster, and that was the drop.
"Actually, Chloe Austen found it...she gave it to me." He said.
My blood boiled.
Chloe freakin Austen was going to lose a handful of hair.
"Have you..?" I started, but I was cut off by his blunt voice.
"No." He said.
I let out a sweet sigh of relief.
"Not yet." He continued.
"Grayson." I panicked. "Please...please don't watch it." I felt the familiar lump rise in my throat and struggled to breathe past it.
He didn't say anything for a long excruciating moment. "What's on it?" He said finally.
"Grays-"
"Look you either tell me yourself or I plug it in." He snapped, before sighing.
I imagined him to be rubbing at his eyes tirelessly, sat at the desk where his computer lay.
I knew then that there was no getting out of this. Grayson would know what was on that video, there was nothing I could do about it.
I sighed, tears threatening to spill. "Will you wait for me?"
~~~
The drive to Grayson's felt much shorter than usual, and the whole time it was on my mind, I thought about what I would say to him, how I would explain myself, how I would make it better...but I came to no conclusion.
When I entered his bedroom, he didn't immediately turn to face me. In fact, he was exactly as I'd imagined him, facing his desk in his spinning chair, swaying side to side. One elbow lay rested on the arm rest and he bit his thumb nail.
"Hi" I uttered, pulling up the other chair and sitting at the side of the table.
With his other hand the twiddled the USB stick on the table in front of him.
What could I do?
Could I snatch it and run? Hope he'd eventually forget about it?
I wished, but now, I had to face my reality.
Grayson didn't respond, he just moved to click the USB into the already booted up computer.
"Wait." I placed my hand on his to stop him. "Please, when it's over, let me explain." I urged.
He looked at me simply. "It must be bad." He said. "If Chloe Austen went out of her way to bring it to me."
To that, I only looked down at my hands, and he clicked the play button.
