Meeting him

Jan walked into the ambulance station with a young lad on her tail "Ah Rubes!" She shouted "hi" she said walking over "this is Jack the new paramedic that we're taking on, Jack this is ruby she's our youngest been with us about a year" she smiled he nodded and held out his hand "nice to meet you" he smiled she shook his hand "and you" she smiled "anything else i was just about to go out" she smiled Jan shook her head "don't you need a partner for that?" She asked Ruby nodded "your coming aren't you?" She said walking off "actually ruby I was hoping you'd go out with Jack from now on" she said "from now on?" She asked "is there a problem?" He asked nicely "Jan no, not from now on, not for good, Iain's my partner not him" she said getting a bit worked up "Ruby calm down, you know Iain won't be back anytime soon, you know that, come on lovely" she said Ruby backed away and walked off into the ambulance she sat on the seat and cried into her hands "Just give me a minute head through to the staff room" she said she knocked on the ambulance door she could hear ruby crying she opened it and walked in "hey Rubes" she said "Jan I can't, I can't work with someone else" she cried "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry but I can't" she cried into her hands shaking her head Jan sat down next to her and pulled her into a hug "why don't you head up and see Iain and be back in an hour and then we will decide what we're going to do" she said "Jan I can't work with someone else" she cried "why is Iain so important to you ruby?" She asked "he's just, he makes me feel so sure about myself, when I'm with him I know I'm doing something good Jan and he's my best friend I can't ever have that feeling that I'm replacing him" she cried "your not replacing him why don't you go and talk to him I bet he will say partner up with Jack" she said "I don't want to see him the last I saw of him they were performing CPR again" she cried "again?" Asked Jan she nodded "yesterday" she cried "oh ruby I didn't know I'm so sorry" she said she nodded "he's not awake yet" she cried "maybe you should go home" Said Jan she shook her head "I want to work I need to work" she cried "what are you afraid of working with Jack?" She asked "I don't know, I trust Iain I trust him so much I'm not sure if I want that trust with someone else" she cried "you love him don't you?" She asked Ruby looked up at her speechless but she didn't deny it "I know that you love him ruby" she said "it couldn't work even if I did" she cried "stop denying it stop putting yourself through this stop blaming yourself!" She said "I love him, I love him so so much" she cried Jan rubbed her back "I know sweetheart I know" she said "this should've been me" she said wiping her eyes "no it shouldn't of course it shouldn't" she said Ruby looked up at her "I'll work with him but only for today" she said Jan nodded "Do you want to go home I can go out with him" she said ruby shook her head "no, no we will be fine" she smiled "you sure? your not going to take it on him are you Rubes?" She asked she shook her head "no, no of course I won't" she said standing up and jumping down onto the floor jan smiled at her "your a good paramedic Rubes don't forget it!" She said ruby smiled and Jan wiped her tearstained face "I'm going to be here I'll buzz you through if there's any change in him" she smiled Ruby nodded and smiled "thank you" she smiled walking out into the staff room. Jan followed her. "Right you look after her!" She smiled at Jack he nodded "of course" he smiled putting a hand on her arm as she moved away "I'll meet you in the ambulance" she said walking out "what's her problem?" He asked "she's been through or going through a really rough patch just don't expect too much of her right now she's finding everything a bit hard" she said he nodded "should she really be at work?" He asked "whether my staff are at work or not is up-to me Alright just give her some space don't jump onto her" she said "go on" she added ruby was sitting on the bench and stood up when he walked out "do you want me to drive?" He asked she nodded "no, no it's okay I'll drive" she said he nodded and climbed into the passenger seat. Ruby drove out she couldn't stop thinking about Iain. "So what's wrong?" He asked "nothing" she said "clearly, you haven't spoken to me since we got in here" he said "listen alright you don't know anything about me, my life or my job so just let me get on" she said getting out to go into someone's house. They got the lady in the back of the ambulance and Ruby stood outside "you go with her I'll drive" she said "I thought you liked to be in the back with them?" He asked "stop questioning my every move!" She said "Alright, I'm sorry" he said getting in with her and ruby climbed in the front. She started driving and picked up her walkie talkie "Jan can I have an update on Iain?" She asked "sweetheart there's no change" she said "Jan can I come home?" She cried Jan nodded to herself "yes of course you can sweetheart" she said sweetly "thank you" she said wiping her eyes "hey and ruby" she said "mm" she said "dry those tears" she said Ruby nodded to herself and shut off her walkie talkie.
