The Surprise

Chapter 66:

I had arrived at the hospital just as the sun was setting. I slowly made my way to Peeta's hospital room, clutching his present to my chest. It was something I had been meaning to give to him for some time but I never got the chance to. I entered the room and noticed that it was empty. All the gadgets that were next to the narrow bed were gone and the bed was neatly done. My eyes widened at the display and before I knew it the box slipped from my fingers and fell to the ground with a loud thump. My shaking hands were in the air, reaching to my chest because it felt as if my heart fell to my feet. It all happened in a matter of seconds: I ran out of the room as fast as I could; my ragged breaths echoing across the halls. I skidded to a stop when I found the doctor. "Doctor Baker!" I shrieked, grabbing her shoulder on impulse. "Miss Everdeen what on earth-" "WHERE IS HE?!" My voice rose and I could feel my face burning in a deep blush of mixed emotions. "Please calm down," she held her hands in front of me to push me away. "No! Where is he?! What happened!?" I yelled, my blood turning cold in my veins. "Peeta Mellark," she whispered. I was practically heaving at the moment and I nodded vigorously. Doctor Baker looked through her clip board and stopped at page 3. "Ah, Peeta Mellark... Patient's in a comma... Reduced heart rate... Severe wounds..." she muttered everything wrong with Peeta under her breath and all I did was stare in anger. "TELL ME DAMN IT!!" I looked down at her messy hand writing. "He's... in surgery." she responded. My breathing slowed down at an uneven pace and I suddenly felt dizzy. "What went wrong?"

"We discovered his left lung was not working as well and we were waiting for a donor,"

"WHAT!? When was this,"

"Katniss I need you to calm down," she said silently. I covered my mouth with my hand and I stared at the ground. "We couldn't tell you before because you were already going through a lot and-" "Shut up okay? Just-" I stopped mid sentence and sat down against the wall.
