Chapter 16 - Walking on eggshells

Zane
"Where are you going?" My arms wrapped protectively around her.

"I'm thirsty. I'm going to the kitchen."

"Tell me what you want. I'll get it for you."

"You just don't want me to leave your bed."

"That's true." I pulled her closer.

"Zane."

"Okay fine, but hurry back."

"I will."

"And don't get lost," I said to her as she got out of bed.

"I won't."

I flung my arms over my face. My bed felt empty without her already. Was it always going to be like this? I thought about it for a while. It probably would be.

I really didn't like her wondering the palace. It was too big and I knew she would get lost.

After a few minutes passed and she still hadn't returned, I was ready to go look for her, but I didn't have to, because I felt her emotions bombarding me. It was a mixture of fear, anger and apprehension. My mind located hers immediately. Anger was the dominant emotion there. I didn't like it, so I dug deeper to find out where it was coming from.

Eli...

Of course it was him. Those two just could not get along. Quickly, I made my way down the stairs and corridors using the tension between the two as a guide. The argument was getting out of control. I didn't want to get in the middle because they were both grown and I trusted them to stop before things got out of control. It was when Eli gripped her wrist so hard snapping the bone that I almost lost it.

"Enough! Both of you!"

I did lose it. Seeing her like that made all reason disappear. But it was Aria who stopped me. If it wasn't for her he would have already been dead.

"Are you okay?"

She didn't answer outright. She whimpered instead. She feared I would snap and really kill him. Believe me, I was close.

"Don't hurt him," she said in my head. "He didn't mean it. It was an accident."

"You're defending him?"

"He's your brother."

"But you are my mate. He needs to be punished for hurting you."

"It's my fault. I shouldn't have been down here."

I looked around the dungeon at the mess Eli had made.

"Leave, before I break something you can't heal."

He did just that.

I didn't care how angry he was. Putting his hands on what's mine and hurting her isn't something I can just let go.

I cradled her wrist against me.

"You'll start to heal soon. Bear with the pain a little while longer."

She whimpered and bit her lip. I was going to wring Eli's neck.

"Xavier! Clean this mess up and lock the dungeon, indefinitely."

"As you wish, your highness."

Soon enough the healing process started to kick in on her wrist. I hugged her and tried to dull the pain of her bones fixing each other. Even after she was healed and I knew her wrist was fine I still didn't let go. I was still pissed at my brother. How dare he treat her this way?
