we made it into the lecture hall with thirty seconds to spare, seeing as our three asses were planted in our seats the moment the bell rang. it was only a few short seconds after the bell where the doors reopened, showing that our professor had just arrived.

nora wasn't joking when she said he was hot.

from where i was seated, he looked to be about six-foot-one or so. he had chocolate brown eyes and raven coloured hair, and his tan skin glowed thanks to the sun shining within from the windows.

"good morning class." our professor states, his accent thick and clearly australian. "my name is mr hood, and it looks as though i'll be your english professor for the semester, and the one following for those of you who choose to continue with this course."

"what'd i tell you?" nora whispered to me.

"to get my shit together." i sighed.

"elle, come on!" she whined.

"after!" i hissed as i continued to listen to our opening lecture.

"in this course, i'm not asking much of you, only a few things i take rather seriously." mr hood continued. "one, complete your work and submit your assignments on time. two, i wont tolerate any tardiness for this class, as it should be one of your main priorities."

and as he states his final rule, i'm pretty sure it's me he's looking dead in the eyes.

"and three, no talking during a lecture." he states. "anyone who refuses to follow these rules is more than welcome to leave."

that's when my phone silently buzzed in my pocket.

incoming call: mom

i ignore the call and return to the lecture, but for some reason that simply won't do for my mother.

noelle: is this important? i'm in class..

mom: if you consider your brother's health important, then yes it is.

shit.

doing this is really bad, and looks really bad in front of our professor, but my family means a hell of a lot more to me than some goddamn lecture.
so as subtly as possible, i slip out of the lecture hall and into the hallway where i can dial my mother's number.

"what happened now?" i asked anxiously. "what's the update on his condition?"

you see, my little brother james had been sick for the past eight weeks. it took us a really long time to get these appointments booked with all of these doctors and specialists.

"it's leukaemia." my mother trembled on her words.

"oh my god. i'll be home by tomorrow."

"no." my mother says. "listen here, young lady. by the grace of god you got into this school on scholarship. you need to be there more than anywhere else. your brother and i will be fine, he knows how much you love him and want to be here, but he also understands that you have to stay."

"mom—"

"now get back to class before that teacher of yours has a fit." my mother commanded.

"tell him i love him, the both of you's." i state.

"love you too, sweetheart." she replies, ending the call.

i take a moment to compose myself and make sure i'm calm enough to reenter the lecture hall. when i do, my professor does not look pleased, not in the slightest.

"are you ready to join us, miss carter?" mr hood asks me, having taken a look at his attendance sheet. "or do you need some more time to chit chat on the phone?"

"i honestly don't give a rats ass." i mumbled, but clearly he heard me mutter something.

"what did you just say to me?" he glares as the class sits on the edge of their seats to watch this scene unfold.

"i said, i don't give a rats ass, is that more clear for you?" i spoke, looking the tall australian dead in the eyes.

"i'll be seeing you after class, miss carter." he nods.

"sure you will." i roll my eyes as i take my seat.

welcome to english, where your teacher can be hot as hell, but even more of a bitch.
