"what the hell was that?" nora whispers to me once the lecture resumes.

"me getting my shit together, like you said." i pointed out.

"why did your mom call?" luke asks.

"james." i mumbled, both of my friends' eyes widening.

"what'd she say?" luke asked.

i couldn't answer, i could barely bring myself to say it.

"elle-"

"and that, mister hemmings, is why harper lee wrote what exactly for the trial chapters of her famous read?" mr hood calls luke out, and thank god the both of us aced ninth grade english.

"to distinguish the false accusations and discrimination that we're faced in that date and time." luke answered as discretely as possible.

it took forever for that lecture to finish. when it was over, i did wind up staying behind to speak to the professor. luke and nora said they would wait outside, but god knows that they both have heir ears pressed up against the door.

"miss carter." mr hood sighs as he adjusts the papers on his desk.

"mr hood." i nod back "glad your attitude couldn't make an appearance at this time."

where is this confidence coming from exactly?

"miss carter, i must have you know that i will in no way tolerate this attitude of yours in my classroom, is that understood?" he questions.

"let me get this straight." i begin. "you can't tolerate my attitude, but i have to tolerate yours? turn that attitude of yours down a notch and give me a goddamn second to explain myself, jesus."

"explain then, miss carter, i haven't got all day." he rolls his eyes.

"i respect each and every one of the rules you have set in place, truly i do." i state. "but with all due respect, i also had to take a phone call that quite frankly means more to me than my own scholarship here. i left subtly to not disturb you or your lecture. is that stuck in your brain now, or do you have to humiliate me in front of this class once again?"

"miss carter, i—"

"what it is with you teachers?" i continue. "always thinking you're top shit and above everyone else. news flash, you're not. we have our own lives and personal problems to deal with. quite frankly, i don't need your bullshit added on top of all of this stress."

"miss carter, whatever it was you had to deal with, all i ask is next time it waits until after class, understood?"

no way in hell he just said that, and to think i was trying to be nice to this guy. i have him nothing more than a glare, what he damn well deserved anyway. however, this did cause for mr hood to step closer towards me and look right down into my eyes.mi could feel his breath trickling down my neck, giving me goosebumps.

"do i make myself clear?"

"yes sir." i said strictly out of nerves, and then again, everyone else knew for a fact that i flat out lied about what i had just agreed to.

"i'll see you tomorrow after class once more, miss carter." mr hood nods as he steps back. "there are things need to be discuss. you are dismissed."

i walk towards the door and glance back at my professor, who's watching me carefully as i leave the lecture hall.

"nora, i swear to god if i open this door and you or luke tumble over i will kill you both." i snap.

and when i open the door, dumb and dumber gladly tumble over.

"you see what i have to deal with?" i deadpan as i glance at my professor. "what's today's excuse, children?"

"the bet." nora shrugs. "i have thirty bucks riding in this."

"and i have fifty, smartass." luke sighs. "come on, mikey and ash are waiting to grab pizza."

"it's eleven in the morning?" i quizzically state.

"and it's michael that made these plans, let's move."
