adriana sluggishly walked into the cafeteria with nadia by her side. nadia was unaware of yesterday's events, especially joey smiling. "so, what happened after i left you and lover boy." she hummed curiously. again, by surprise, adriana deadpanned. "i took him to the nurse and we talked a bit, now why did you leave us alone?" she asked a bit quietly. nadia shrugged, "i got bored and couldn't find the nurse."
adri rolled her eyes, finding joey along the way. he sat alone in the middle of a lunch table, the end of the bench. he prodded at his lunch, unamused. "oh look, the lone wolf." nadia groaned. adri glared at the strawberry blonde and hauled her ass over to joeys table. joeys eyes immediately recognized the dirty white vans. "damn daniel." he grinned, seeing adriana, and her friend. nadia blinked rapidly and stared at adri who took a seat.

fifteen minutes had passed and the two didn't even notice nadia standing in awe of the obvious connection they had. which they were oblivious to. then, the worst happened. jack was seen by joey first, then nadia while adri's back was facing him. he strolled their way.
"adri we should go." nadia nervously whimpered and grabbed her bag. joey shot nadia a look of concern and thankfulness while jack approached, too soon. "birlem!" he chirped happily. joey stared at the table blankly. "this another girl you're gonna take home?" he scoffed, tanking adri's body. her eyebrows furrowed and she crossed her arms. "who the hell are you?" she snapped. jack was taken aback, nobody talks back to him.
his hands slam on the table as he looks back to joey, "i asked you a question you stupid fuck."

adri looked back to joey who was already tensing up. then, saw nadia watching in horror of what the next move was— so adriana made it. she slammed her backpack down and turned jacks cheek, an immediate smirk appearing before she slapped it away at her hardest. joeys eyes widened, as did the whole lunch rooms.
"what the fuck." jack spat, his eyes envious with rage. "don't go fucking raping her, like you did maddie.. birlem." he grinned. adriana's face drained it's color, as did joeys. jack stormed off. it was immediate that joey, and adri's eyes were on each other. she grabbed his wrist and yanked him out of the room.

stopping by the janitors closet in the empty hallway she stared at him. she stared until she found something. a hint, a word, an expression. she found his eyes prickling tears. she furrowed her eyebrows and softened a bit. "what's wrong?" she asked softly. joey looked at her and pulled her into the closet, explaining his mortal love for maddie ziegler and his story. an hour after she sat in the dark closet with her knees to her chest, joey crossing his legs and pursing his lips. this was the most comfortable silence they had sat in ever. adriana almost felt as if she was alone it was so comfortable. joey on the other hand just enjoyed her presence.

four am.
joeys darkest hour perhaps. four am was the last time that he had seen maddie. the last time he had smelt her sweet perfume, or the last time he'd even heard her soft voice. those beautiful eyes that lit up a room with ease.
this time, joey found himself crying. normally he had sat in his bedroom and stared at the ceiling with no emotion. he finally felt needed by maddie, but fucking henry took that away. so now, joey needed adriana. now.
he plucked his phone from his jean pockets and dialed her number, getting almost an immediate response.

"hello?" her soft, raspy voice connected through the line. joey replayed it twice while sitting up at the edge of his bed.

"hey, could you possibly sneak out? i can come get you don't worry." he rasped, his voice coming out as a small whisper. adriana hesitated, but confirmed to meet him.

the dim street lights led adri to the coffee shop nearby. she stuck her hands into her hoodie pockets and walked in to see joey sitting in a booth while playing with his fingers. god damn, everything was always so dimly lit she wished split second she could see his features in nice lighting for once. the lighting wasn't dim enough to see his red eyes and pouted lips though. she paced into the booth and slid in. joeys eyes shifted to her and pleaded, for something. he just wanted to hear her voice, know that she was okay. "how are you." he rasped, adri looking around confused responded with a warm "good, what about you?" she whispered. why on earth would he want her at the coffee shop at four am, just to ask if she was okay? she fucking was sleeping for fucks sake. sleep is important to adri, very important. joey lowered his eyes to the table, "i'm okay." he admitted, his fingers now on top of hers. he traced the back of her hand softly. adriana watched in complete awe, gushing in her own mind about how soft he was.

after a short while at the coffee shop, they stopped at the park, sitting in the swings and watching the sun rise. "this is nice." joey admitted, earning more of her attention.
"hm?" she hummed. joey grasped the swing chain in both hands and let his feet gently push, his body swaying a tad. "having someone— to be with.." he trailed off and looked into the sun rising behind the homes. adri's stomach did a little flip, her legs crossing.
"it is." she admitted and looked up. joey stood up and reached his hand out. "library?" adri tilted her head and gave her hand to joeys, their fingers indulging in each other's company. joey led her into the bookstore right by the court house, and small park ahead. "this, is my second home." he said with a small voice. adri looked around a bit while enjoying the sound of his smooth, soft voice. she spaced out. it was like a kid in the candy store. she loved books, and library's in general. something about them screamed home. she felt a soft palm to her cheek, "am i bothering you? you haven't spoken in minutes." joey whispered, his expression was concerned. adri shook her head. "you could never."
