"Ivan, how are you?" Nora asked, trying to make small talk

"Ivan, how are you?" Nora asked, trying to make small talk. Oliver had abandoned her to find a friend. When he got back, Nora was going to kill him for leaving her with the dullest airhead ever. Ivan threw great parties but he was just so boring!

  "Good. How are you?"

  "Good."

  "Good."

  "Yeah."

She slushed her drink her hand and avoided eye contact. Being a wallflower wasn't really her thing. She thrived on attention but everyone at the party was, in her words, "shitty and childish". Nora and Oliver were the It-Couple. Everyone knew them. So, of course, there were a lot of expectations and standards. She had to socialise but everyone was so immature! Nora felt ancient around them.

"Hey, what ever happened to your hot friend, Madeline Lockhart? She had the nicest ass and-"

"She's not here!" Nora snapped.

Nora felt bad for snapping at Ivan but any bozo would know not to ask Nora Lawrence about Madeline Lockhart or she-who-shall-not-be-named. They were best friends since childhood. Then, during their final year of high school Madeline decided that, out of the four million guys in New York, she would sleep with Nora's boyfriend. Oliver cheated on Nora with Madeline. The truth still hurt. Nora and Oliver's relationship had recovered obviously. Madeline and Nora's relationship, however, had deteriorated quickly and Nora hadn't spoken to her in years. Last she heard of her, Madeline was travelling around Europe or something.

  "What about Samuel?"

  "Samuel?"

"You know! The guy whose sister killed herself."

Nora grimaced at his crude choice of words. "His name is Spencer."

Nora didn't actually know where he was. They didn't really speak much anymore. There was no acrimonious end to her relationship with him. They just lost touch after high school. Oliver met with him from time to time but not often enough to call him a brother like he used to.

  Oliver. Where was he?

"Do you know where Oliver is?"

Ivan pointed him out with his finger. There he was. Standing by the drinks with two cups in his hand and a laugh on his face. And a beautiful girl by his side. Nora watched in horror as he handed the girl a drink and continued to talk to her. They laughed about something very funny evidently as the girl threw her head back with a loud guffaw echoing through the room.
