Nora had studied pathetic fallacy in school. It was a technique used in literature in which natural phenomena like the weather were related to the general mood of the text. The sullen clouds and the harsh rain perfectly matched Nora's mood as she returned home and she wondered if her life was just a movie or book. This would obviously be the climax. It couldn't get worse from this.

Her thumb lingered over a name in her contacts on her phone. Should she call him?

Before she could think any further, her finger impulsively pressed down on the contact and he answered after two rings.

  "Hello?"

  "Hey! Ben, it's Nora."

"Oh, hey!"

His voice sounded like he had just woken up. Nora checked the time. It was later than Nora had realised. It was eleven o'clock. She instantly regretted calling him. It was probably the vodka.

"Shit, sorry Ben. I... uh, didn't realise you were asleep."

"No, no it's fine. Don't worry about it. What's up?"

Nora sighed. She had forgotten why she had even called him. All she wanted was some comfort and for some reason she believed Ben would be the source of comfort she needed. She felt stupid already. They barely knew each other! But he was the only one who knew about Oliver's drug problems. He understood what Nora was going through.

"I... I don't know," She murmured.

"Nor? What's wrong?"

Sighing, Nora paused for a moment. "I just had a fight with Oliver. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have called you-"

"Stop apologising. Do you want to talk about it?"

  "Um, I-I...I don't know."

"That's okay. Do you need a place to crash? We have a spare bedroom and you probably don't want to sleep in the same bed with him tonight..."

"No, it's fine. I just... I'm so stupid!" Nora broke down, rivers streaming from her eyes. The magnitude of love she had for Oliver was incomprehensible. He was her life. He was her past, present and future and she was utterly obsessed. The way he so callously spat accusations at her and accused her of taking a bribe broke her heart. It broke her. It made her realise that she loved him way more than he loved her.
