Nora's morning went exactly how she imagined it. It was truly splendid. Oliver took the day off and they spent the morning lounging in bed.

Deciding they were absolutely famished, they went into the kitchen to make their first meal as an engaged couple together. Nora was sitting up on the breakfast bar with her legs crossed and a cup of coffee tucked snugly between her them. Oliver insisted he make them breakfast but she was starving and he took his time making eggs. She was given the task of spooning out the avocado and making toast but she was too busy twisting her ring and admiring it to do any work. Small, little turquoise stones (Nora's birthstone) encircled one huge diamond in the middle.

"Hey Oliver?"

"Yeah?"

"When did you buy this ring?"

He smiled and took a moment to reply. "A month ago. I was meant to give it to you on our anniversary but we had that fight and I wasn't sure if it was the right time."

The fight. Nora had forgotten about it. It must have gotten lost in all the other fights they had. What was it about? His father? No, not him. Was it about her going out too much with her friends? No, that wasn't it. What was it about? Oh! It was about her mother staying with them for a night. It bothered Oliver but she couldn't remember why.

"But we had a fight yesterday."

"I know. We're always fighting," He laughed although there was a tinge of seriousness to his tone.

"You say that like it's a good thing," Nora said (though it came out as barely a whisper).

She didn't want to ruin their dreamy morning by talking about serious matters like how unstable they were. Her logic was that their instability prevented their relationship from becoming boring and bland. It was smart!

Oliver let out a deep sigh and turned around to her, placing his arms on either side of her. "It's not, I know that. I guess we just need to work a bit more on not arguing." He kissed her quickly before she could reply. "I love you so much, Nor."

She smiled. "I love you too...."

She suddenly remembered her mother's phone call yesterday and furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Did you tell my mom?"

"Mmm? Oh! Yeah, I was asking for her blessing to marry you."

The thought of her dead father not being there to give his blessing made her heart sink but she quickly recovered. "That's cute. Thank you."

He mumbled something inaudible then kissed her again, deeper, making her feel light-headed with giddiness. His hands were all over her. A sense of urgency arose. She knotted her fists in his t-shirt and pulled him closer and closer. She could feel herself melting into his arms, which were perfectly wrapped around her. Perfectly in sync. Then the smoke alarm went off.
