Nora couldn't help but feel self-conscious under her mother's excruciating examination

Nora couldn't help but feel self-conscious under her mother's excruciating examination. It was times like these where she really couldn't stand her over-bearing mother. Although Nora had told her mother specifically that she didn't want her to organise the engagement party, one week after Oliver's proposal, Ellen arrived at her daughter's house and casually informed her of the party taking place in three days. What followed was a strenuous day of trying on various dresses, none of which her mother liked.

She had just tried on her final dress when her mother came in.

"I love the trail and the plunging back. Okay, get this one."

Nora stared at her mother for a moment trying to detect any hint of sarcasm. Was she serious? "Mom? It's white. It looks like a wedding dress."

"And? Everyone knows it's not your wedding."

Nora sighed and looked at herself in the mirror. She hated most of the dresses her mother forced her to try on. It was her party. She should have been able to wear whatever she wanted. "I hate everything here. I'm not getting any of these dresses."

"Nor-"

"No, Mom. It's my party." She hated raising her voice at her mother but she left her no choice.

"Yes but-"

"Mom! This isn't your party!" Nora snapped. "So leave it alone! You've been giving me a headache since you started planning!"

Ellen stared open-mouthed at her daughter. "Um..."

The smugness got to Nora. She was probably the first person to ever shut her mother up and leave her speechless. Ellen's face said it all. The woman was shook.

"I appreciate your help, Mom, really. But all I want you to worry about is what you'll wear to this party."

  "Well, actually, I think-"

"No, Mom. Just... let me take over. Let me plan it."

She raised her hands in defence and took a step backwards. "Okay, then."

Nora could sense that her mother was upset but she had to think of herself sometimes. She didn't say a word as she watched her mother leave the shop. For the first time ever, she didn't feel anything as her mother left her. Not relief, not disappointment, not sadness; nothing. She justified her lack of care and indifference by considering all the times Ellen treated her the same way. She was only mirroring her mother's behaviour.

It wasn't like she even wanted a party. Nora loved attention but an engagement party so soon seemed like she was rushing to get married to the public eye when the opposite was true.

As she opened her mouth to call after her mother, Nora heard a gasp behind her, followed by a soft 'hi'. Looking around to find the source of the voice, her eyes focused on a familiar woman in a white wedding dress. Although her hair wasn't in long braids anymore, she still looked like the girl Nora used to know. Her trademark eyes studied Nora carefully, just like they used to all those years ago. Brown as the earth, dark as coal. The girl standing in front of Nora cocked her head and stared back at her like a reflection from a distorted mirror. Neither of them knew what to say.
