  "I-I-I..."

"Y-y-you what?" Veronica mocked, letting out a laugh. "Nora is it?"

Nora nodded but Veronica spoke before she could open her mouth.

"Look, I'm not trying to scare you or anything. Honestly, I'm just looking out for you. You're so young and it would be a shame to see you get your heart broken by a disloyal bastard like Ben."

"It wasn't me," Nora finally managed to say. "It wasn't me. Ben and I only met like two months ago. I swear."

Veronica's eyes narrowed to mere slits before she suddenly backed away and releasing her grip on Nora's arm.

"Okay... Well, in any case, be careful. He's not as perfect as he seems."

Nora couldn't imagine Ben being disloyal. The concept seemed impossible. The thought of Nora falling for yet another liar made her sick to the stomach and this time no amount of painkillers could help her.

Jenny began to squirm in her mother's arms.

"Here, take her. I don't have a motherly bone in my body and I think she senses that," Veronica sighed, pushing the crying child into Nora's arms.

Jenny didn't miraculously stop crying when she was in Nora's arms but it wasn't because of Nora. She seemed to hold some grudge against her stranger mother.

Ben strolled into the deafeningly quiet room with a polite smile on his face and a small tray in his hands holding up a glass cafetière and a ceramic coffee set.

"Actually, Ben, I best be off..." Veronica suddenly announced.

Nora remained frozen on the couch as Ben furrowed his eyebrows.

  "But I just made-"

Veronica walked up to him and placed a kiss on his cheek, shutting him up.

"I think full custody was a great idea. Jennifer would never have been happy with me," She pondered looking back at the baby in Nora's arms.

Ben frowned slightly. "V, I still want you to see her regularly. I don't want her to grow up without a mother."

Veronica looked at Nora knowingly and Ben seemed to understand why. Nora did too and quickly looked down. She wasn't ready to be anyone's mother yet.

"She'll be fine. I'm a lousy mother. Anyway, it was nice meeting you, Nora. Goodbye Ben."

Nora was left alone in the room as Ben escorted Veronica to the door. Nora was still in shock. Ben had lied to her about the reason for his divorce. Ben had cheated on his wife. Ben had cheated on the mother of his child. He wasn't perfect.

She was finally happy. Why did things have to always go wrong for her?

"Well, that was unexpected!" Ben laughed, taking Jenny into his arms and placing her on a rocking chair. He let out a breath of relief. As he fastened his daughter in, Nora stood up and began to put her shoes back on and fix her bag. Ben's smile dropped and his cooing stopped immediately when he noticed Nora was ready to leave.
