When Alex woke, her head rested against a warm body. She had felt alive in that exact moment, her whole mind and body felt completed again. She had what she wanted and would do anything and everything to keep feeling this way.
"Finally, you've been asleep forever."
"So, you've been watching me sleep?"
"Well what else was I supposed to do?"
"I don't know, you could have got up and done something."
"Then I would have awoken sleeping beauty."
"Still creepy to watch someone sleep."
"Oh, really? Next time I'll just wake you up then."
"Next time?"
"After this how could there not be a next to our story, unless it's you who doesn't want a next time..."
"You seem worried about that."
"A little."
"Why?"
"You can't be this dense."
Nate was fingering Alex's hair as she laid back against his bare chest. She had been listening to his heart beat steadily and letting herself relax against him as his chest rose and fell. She had never felt more peaceful, even after he called her dense.
"That wasn't nice."
"Really though. I don't know how many times I have to tell you I like you or that I care about you for you to get it through your thick head."
"Have you ever thought I just like hearing you say it?"
"No, the thought hadn't crossed my mind."
"Look who's dense now."
"Oh, ouch."
"Hurts doesn't it?"
"No, but do we need to talk about last night?"
"Only if you're trying to start something."
"Start wha– oh, never mind."
"Again, who's the dense one?"
"Shut up Alex."
The two had put back on their clothes and headed out of the hotel room. Coincidental timing as housekeeping had just arrived at the room. The two passed the housekeeper and said their pleasantries. The two walked onto the elevator and the door closed.
"She's going to know."
"What?"
"The cleaning lady. She's going to know we slept together."
Nate just laughed and shook his head. He seemed to not care about if anyone knew what they had done last night. Alex did not care either but wanted to see if Nate would care if people knew. She was concerned that judgement from others might have still steered Nate away from her.
The drive felt too short. It normally does when coming back from a vacation, no matter how long or short the time was; the return trip effect. Alex was sad that their little vacation was coming to an end. She liked just getting away in general. Being with Nate and getting away had her relaxed and she truly enjoyed her life in those times.
"Nate?"
"Mm?"
"Will you promise me something?"
"What's that?"
"That we can do this again sometime soon?"
"How about we go on a planned trip next time though."
"Sounds good to me."
"Spring break then?"
Alex looked over to Nate, a large smile was on her face. He smiled as well, small but joyful. He had not seemed this happy since before Tyler. Even then, he had not seemed to be in as good of a mood as he portrayed. Alex felt like she had battled hard and it was worth it because she had won.
