I took a sip of my latte and stared at the ugly wall art in front of me. Sometimes these all aesthetic coffee shops were annoying as hell but I couldn't bring myself to go to a new one. There's something about walking into a coffee shop and the only thing you can smell is coffee grounds is what gets me, every time.

Today was a special day, my one year anniversary of being single and I was very happy. I told Celeste that I was happy to not have a man, that I could live by myself and be happy as an independent women. It was working out fine, no fine isn't the right word, but great is. Having the liberty of not stressing about a man is perfect. Everything is perfect about it.

"Ellie!" My brother came waltzing in with a goofy smile on his face.

"Jacob, what's up!" He gives me a side hug and sits down, "I see your still into these terrible coffee shops."

"I wouldn't be me without these terrible coffee shops." Some people around us give us dirty looks for saying it's a terrible coffee shop. Coffee's are great, but hospitality not really. They could really up there game.  "So, how was your trip?" Jacob went traveling for his job. A nature conservationist, my parents were thrilled. Me, not so much. Even though I had two other brothers who were taking a gap year, my parents still gave me a hard time. "Eye opening, seeing how much everyone cares about animals and their planet melts my heart." I laugh, "Only you would say something like that." , "Your right, but I came all the way to Iowa to see you. So hows the university of Iowa?" I'm a creative writing major, like I said my parents were not thrilled. At all.

"I guess it's good. Everything is great, now I'm pretty smart so I know you didn't just come here for me." He was dating my best friend. Terrible I know.

"Your right, but I needed to ask you this question." , "Ask away!" I saw him take this small box out of his hand. It was velvet, I knew what was coming next and I was smiling ear to ear. He was going to propose to Celeste, and it was going to be great. "Do you think she'll like the ring?" I stared at the ring in front of me. The band had diamonds all along it and to top it off quite literally was a beautiful diamond. Tears suddenly filled my eyes, I didn't know why I was getting emotional about it but here I was. "She'll love it Jacob. Absolutely love it!" His smile was goofier than ever. He stood up and woo'd. He's so embarrassing.

"Can I have my check please!" I yelped, he was still being an embarrassing boy. "Someone already payed for it Ellie." Damn it! The barista knew my name! UGh, "Really, who?" She pointed to a hot guy and my brother tensed up and gave the poor guy a look. "Could you stop looking like you want to kill him? Everything is going to be fine!" I slapped his arm politely and walked over to the guy.

He smiled at me and his friend started laughing at me, "Thanks for paying, but you really didn't have to do that." I smile. "Hey I just thought paying it forward would be nice and since your so nice on the eyes," I stopped him right there. "So nice on the eyes huh." He nodded his head like a four year old. "Do you not like hearing that?"He asked. "Just not used to it charming, now where do you think this going?", "Maybe I'll give you my number. Maybe dinner one night?" He smirked. Lord, why do make guys like him? "Sure, here's my number. I'm Ellie, do you have a name Charming?", "Bryant."

With that I walked out of the cafe and giggled like a four year old. My brother did not look amused, "I'm telling Brent, Elijah, and dad.", "Go ahead, see what they do!"
