"So, what's going on with Creative Writing boy?" (1)
Ashley and I were lounging on the couch, completely ready to leave for church while everyone else rushed to finish getting themselves together. This was a regular occurrence; Ashley and I tended to be ready while everyone else changed their outfits eighteen different times despite the fact that you could only find so many combinations for pencil skirts and floral shirts. (2)
They ended up looking like forty-year-old mothers no matter what, so it's not like it made much of a difference. Yara was still staying at the apartment, and she and Paige had been up talking since close to six o'clock in the morning.
"Nothing." I shook my head as Madison walked in the room in a light pink pencil skirt and green floral top, (3) "Didn't I tell you he was the one with a girlfriend?"
"What happened?" Madison asked as she sat down next to Ashley on the couch, "A boy?"
I shook my head.
"There's this cute guy in my Creative Writing class, Neil, but he has a girlfriend, so it's not like anything is going to come from it." I shrugged, "He's a chill guy though, it's fun to have someone to talk to in class. We're becoming friends."
"Wow, Morgan." Madison shook her head in mock amazement, "I'm proud of you."
I raised my eyebrows.
"...thanks? Why?"
"Well, because that's a very mature way of looking at it." She replied, leaning back against the couch, "I wouldn't have expected that from you."
I narrowed my eyes at her.
"Why not?" I laughed slightly, "I like to think I'm a relatively mature person." Far more mature than you, I finished the thought in my head.
"Well, I don't know...going after a guy with a girlfriend just seems like something that you'd be perfectly fine with doing."
I heard Ashley audibly gasp at that comment and I leaned forward slightly, unsure of whether or not she could possibly be serious.
"Madison, that's actually...a really rude thing to say."
The other girl shrugged and let out a small laugh before getting off the couch and walking out of the room.
I looked over at Ashley, whose eyes were bugging out of her head.
"Did she just call me a whore?"
"Well, she definitely called you a homewrecker...and they're pretty much the same thing."
I shook my head, a small laugh coming from my chest—the kind of laugh that came out when you didn't quite believe whatever was going on around you was actually real life. (4)
"Hey, what's going on?" Paige walked out into the living room in an outfit that was astoundingly similar to Madison's, "Madison just told me that you're probably pissed at her, Morgan. What happened?"
Ashley relayed the story as Paige sat down on the couch and I self-consciously pulled my mid-thigh-length skirt further down.
"Well, I mean...you kind of brought it on yourself." (5)
