"Jane!" My mom calls. "There's a boy at the door!"

"I'm coming!" I call back, quickly stuffing the remainder of my breakfast into my mouth.

Unsurprisingly, standing outside my door was Luke.

"Hey." He smiles.

"Hi." I mumble in reply, still finishing my breakfast, before my mom pulls me away from the door.

"Jane, could I have a word with you please. In private." Mom hisses, leading me into the kitchen.

"Can you please tell me why there is a boy with a lip ring, which is against school rules, and obviously not obeying the school dress code, standing in our door way? And you better have a good excuse young lady, because you know I don't want you associated with those hooligans."

"He's...um....we...erm...I'm his tutor!" I lie.

"Tutor?"

"Yeah, he...um...sucks at math, so I'm helping him. We're just gonna pop into the library before school and do some math."

"Really?" She questions, not quite believing me.

"Mom, you always say I should help people. I'm helping by making this guy have a better education."

"Okay then, go help him. If you're just helping his education that's great Janey." She smiles.

I smile back before finding a snack.

"I'll see you after school, have a good day, love!" She calls as I grab my bag before leaving the house.

"A math tutor? That was the best excuse you had?" Luke laughs as I shut the door behind me.

"Ugh, could you really hear all that?"

"Yes, yes I could and can I just say, you're a terrible liar."

The walk to school is filled with awkward silences and even more awkward words.

"I think your mom hates me." Luke says.

"I don't know, it was just the piercing. And the clothes." I say, noticing his tank top which read 'I don't trust me either'.

"And the rest of me." He mumbles.

"Look, Luke do you really think this friend thing is going to work? I'm a nerd, you're some cool punk guy, it's really not the best arrangement."

"It can work if we want it to. Anyway, you promised you'd hang out with me today."

He begins to slow his pace as we reach the school.

"Luke!" Ashton calls from the school gate.

"What's she doing here?" Michael snaps as we approach them.

"She is hanging out with us today." He replies.

"Dude, you can't just invite some nerd over here." Calum mutters.

"Luke... You said you'd asked them." I say.

"Sorry, that may have been a teeny lie."

"A small lie?" Ashton says. "Jesus, Luke she's not hanging with us. Do you know what that would do to our reputation?"

I turn to leave, "I'm going, if it's just going to cause an argument I'll leave."

"Wait, Jane." Luke says, running after me. "You can't leave, you made a promise."

"Oh, and you keep all your promises do you?" I snap.

"Most of the time, yes. I'm sorry about them, they're just being fucking dumbasses today."
