It Doesn't Matter How It Happens

Duane's P.O.V.

Rick - Dad's new friend- taught me, and the Korean teens how to shoot. The rifle was loud, it really hurt my ears. I didn't like the sound of it, but when the girl shot it, she made a bullseye the first time she shot the top of the water bottle.

Dad went ahead and shot his revolver, then practiced with the rifle and he was really good too.

" We're going to have to go out and get some more supplies sooner or later." Dani pointed out as Lucy put her head on Dani's left shoulder as she wrapped both arms around Dani's left arm. We were having dinner as the stars became visible. " I was planning on going into Atlanta tomorrow, do either of you want to come?"

" I'll go with you," Rick said. " I think she will feel better if I do."

" I'm not planning on staying long. I have a few places marked on the map I got from the visitors center we could go. Some of the places are pretty small, so we'll be in and out."

" Besides, I think this would be a really good bonding moment for you two." Lucy said.

" Well leave around noon. It's supposed to be warmer tomorrow. It seems like they always become faster when it's hot. And if we do get split up, head for the Bellwood Quarry. It's only a few miles away from the city. You see the crane top over there?"

He looked in the direction and seen what she was talking about. " It sounds like a good plan. I just don't want to run into the ones that run."

" Speaking of Walkers," Lucy started. " Rick, I need to tell you something."

" Do some full-on sprint now?" He asked.

" It's not the bite that does it. You came back no matter what."

" You mean to tell me that whatever this is, we all have it?" Dad asked. " Were you told this or-" 

" One of my firefighters got his throat ripped out. And the next thing I know, he came back. Then a girl in our town jumped, confirmed dead, then tore into her brother's throat." Dani explained. 

" I'm sorry to hear that." I told her.  

" Thank you," Dani said as she pulled another beer out of the cooler she had. " So, how about telling me some crazy High School stories you two." 

I looked at Rick, and he looked at me, then we smirked, and Dani caught it. 

" Rick and Shane stole the Principle's car." Lucy blurted, laughing. 

" Do I need to remind you that you were the one who hotwired it for us?" Rick asked. 

Dani looked at me. " That makes you even hotter." 

" Well, if it makes it any better, she was always in the middle of whatever we were doing." 

The frogs and crickets got louder and louder as the night progressed. Dad and I had gone to go set up our tent to let them catch up, and in the morning, Dani and Rick want to Atlanta for a supply run. 

Dani's P.O.V.

The vehicle we were in ran out of gas in the middle of the road. We walked down a road a few miles and found a ranch house. Rick went into the house, while I went to the backyard to see if there were still any animals. I was surprised to see a horse was still there. And to see that it was still healthy.  

" I found a vehicle around the house there, but it wouldn't start." 

" Did you hot-wire it?"
