Beside the Dying Fire

( Morgan's P.O.V.)

It started to pour down the rain as Rick and I cleared the Westside of the estate. Dani and Daryl took the Southside, Allen and Donna took the Northside, and Gleen and Maggie cleared the Eastside.

By evening, all of the dead bodies were taken care of, everyone picked a house and rested up.

We had found a home. Finally things were turning around.

The next morning we all got together and discussed the food situation.

" We have enough food to last us of our end." Maggie said.

" It was the same for us too." Donna said.

" Us too." Morgan said.

" Counting us as well," Dani said. " The next step is the water, firewood, and gas for the generators, and of course weapons."

" I'll find the water source." Daryl said, volunteering.

" I'll go too." Lucy said, appearing.

" You need to rest and grieve." Dani pointed out.

" We're just looking for water, plus you know it's not safe to be out there by ourselves."

" Someone else can go."

" I can't just do anything. Besides, we're looking for water, not preparing to do surgery." Lucy said, walking away alongside Daryl.

" I will handle the firewood. I cut lumber before all of this, but I just need to borrow your ax." Allen said.

" Your welcome to it. Shane, you and I can head out and look for gas. Gleen, Maggie, you guys mind cleaning out that greenhouse?"

" Dad started this morning." Maggie told her.

" Dale and I have watch covered," Andrea said. " Use the light and shine it in our direction so we don't accidentally shoot you."

" While your out, take that sign down." Morgan said.

" Looks like it's already down," Dani yelled back. " Check the fence while we're out!"

" Hey, Honey," Donna said at the RV. " Should we take this AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"

" Donna, NO!" Allen shouted, a gunshot ringing out.

" How the hell did we not see that one?" Dani asked, watching Donna die.

" The real question is why didn't it pounce sooner of it was right there," Maggie said. " Right?"

" Donna, why, why the hell did this happen. It was clear, I know it was. " I cleared the damn house!"

" Their's some walker's building up on the fence already!" Dale yelled.

" I'll handle them on our way out," Dani said after hugging Allen. " Come on Shane."

They left, leaving us to secure the hole in the fence that was behind the house that the walker that killed Donna crawled out from.

Rick and I dug the hole and helped Allen bury the body, then he spent the rest of the evening with the boys.

" Hey, Maggie!" Susie yelled from one top on the RV's hood. " I see a prison in the distance!"

Maggie got up to where she was and Dale gave her a pair of binoculars so she could see.

" Is it true?" Carol asked.

" It's full of the sick." Maggie said.

" Come on, get down from there, don't want you to fall." Gleen said.

He helped her down, including Susie and the rest of us checked the fence and started cleaning up the yards and the insides of the houses.

I do wish it would all stay like this forever, but the other side of me told me that my dreams would never become true.

And that's what made my blood boil. These kids could never have a normal life.

Ever.
