( Romen's P.O.V.)

Lucy was the nicest person Jay and I have ever met. Even though she didn't know our language, she found a way to communicate with us, and she sticks to us and the kids like glue. She's even teaching us English. Important words like run, stay here, watch out.

A few weeks in, we knew English, and we told her why he hadn't been talking. We were mute. And she was totally fine with that. Our family thought it wasn't normal, and now they're dead. We still miss them.

" You guys can start speaking when you're ready, OK? I'm not pressuring you to talk at all."

" We know." I wrote down.

" Good."

" Aunt Lucy, am we doing this right?" Sophia asked.

She looked over to her paper. " Yes, good job guys. I'll be right back. Let me go get a snack for you guys.

A few seconds later, she came back with some pudding cups and plastic spoons. They all were chocolate.

She handed them to us and we took a break as she dug around in her bag until she found what she was looking for. A manga and a regular book.

" This is for you guys to start practicing your reading skills." She said as she handed us the book.

The title was Hawks Harbor.

" What's that?" Carol asked.

" This is called a manga. It's exactly like a comic book, you just read it backward."

While she helped them figure out how to read it, Jay and I turned to chapter one. It was a little hard at first, but it came to be pretty easy.

The stay at our little community lasted for two years. In those two, we met another family. Allen, Donna, and their twin toddlers Billy and Ben, and Lori actually straightened out.

It's winter now, and we left, leading us to set up another camp in the woods while Dani and Daryl scouted out for a place for us to settle down in again.

" Lori tells me Donna just won't shut up about you and the girls living together in that camper. She started right after we got back from target practice today and hasn't let up since." I told Dale.

" I have no clue why. You guys never had a problem with it. Right?"

" Bitch needs to learn to shut her mouth," Shane said. " She's been trying to get me to get Lucy away from the kids. Thinks she's going to infect them with gay."

" Seriously?" Dale asked. " I have no clue how Allen can stand her."

Shane and I have become close friends again, and as he continued to chop wood, we continued to talk. The night before, Shane had a mental breakdown, so now I'm sticking to him like glue.

" Just because my wife is dead and I'm living with my grandkids don't mean anything inappropriate is going on."

" I didn't know you were related." Shane said.

" By my first wife's son. Her son and his wife were controlling, meaning we never really got to have contact with them until they were older and told the police that they wanted to like with me and my wife. Their parents weren't very happy about that, but we finally got custody, and we lost touch with them. I have no idea if they're alive, dead, or one of those things."

" Donna's just a housewife who doesn't have soap opera's to keep her entertained, so she's just starting shit. Best thing we can do is just ignore her." Shane said, chopping another log.
